Loveland City Council will remember former colleague Hugh McKean on Tuesday - Loveland Reporter-Herald

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Calling him an “invaluable” mentor, Loveland City Council Don Overcash recalled Colorado House Minority Leader Hugh McKean as a model for elected officials at every level of government.

At Tuesday’s regular meeting, he and other current councilors will have an opportunity to share their thoughts about their former colleague, who died unexpectedly on Sunday.

“It’s a loss to the people of Loveland, Colorado,” Overcash said. “It’s so difficult to govern on issues if you want to be hard one way or the other way. One has to learn to make progress in the direction you’d like to go. But you have to work with other people, and Hugh had the ability to do that exceptionally well.”

McKean, a Republican, represented Ward III on City Council between 2009 and 2016, before being elected to the Colorado General Assembly to represent House District 51. He was selected as minority leader in 2020.

McKean was running unopposed for a fourth term to the seat in the upcoming midterm elections.

Councilors will have a chance to speak about McKean during the points of personal privilege portion of the meeting, which will be moved to the top of the agenda.

Nuisance amendments

Loveland City Council will also take a formal vote on long-awaited updates to the municipal code that are aimed at streamlining the city’s nuisance provisions.

The proposed ordinance would consolidate nuisance regulations and abatement procedures currently located in different sections of the code in a new section, Title 16.

The proposal also includes significant updates to some existing nuisance provisions, including those on unlawful vehicles, outdoor storage of materials on residential properties, and tree maintenance.

The update also targets “chronic” nuisance properties, and gives code officers additional tools for enforcing repeat violations.

According to the agenda packet, plans to update the nuisance provisions have been underway by the city’s Development Services division since 2020, after many years of neglect.  If enacted, the proposed amendments will offer residents “clear and fair requirements that reflect community values” and will “remedy problematic enforcement issues.”

City Council got a preview of the suggested changes at a study session on June 14, and were able to add feedback and direction. The proposal has also been subject to several discussions by the city’s planning commission, and at least three public hearings.

Other business

In an item held over from the Oct. 18 meeting, City Council will also decide whether to update city building codes to incorporate the 2021 standards of the International Code Council.

Council will also consider whether to join an intergovernmental agreement with Larimer County and city of Fort Collins to purchase and develop the Heaven’s Door Ranch property west of the city.

Almost all of the $9 million in funding for the Heaven’s Door project will come from the county, but it is requesting $500,000 from Loveland, which come from the Open Lands sales tax fund. Fort Collins is being asked to provide $750,000.

Finally, in new business, Mayor Jacki Marsh will ask City Council to discuss the city’s personnel policies concerning violence in the workplace and discipline.

How to participate

The council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers at the Municipal Building, 500 E. Third St.

Comments from members of the public will be accepted in person as well as over Zoom.

Those wishing to join by Zoom can use the ID 975 3779 6504 with a passcode of 829866, according to the meeting agenda.

The meeting will be broadcast on Comcast Channel 16/880, Pulse TV channel 16 and streamed through the city’s website at lovgov.org/tv.

Tuesday’s agenda packet can be found through the Loveland City Council’s website at lovgov.org.

Why your new colleague is probably earning more than you - The Australian Financial Review

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

“Because from what we see, as soon as someone goes to look for a job, as soon as they interview, then their head’s turned,” Mr Jones said.

Hiring managers should consider using contractors while demand for workers remains high, too. That way, they could secure the help they needed today without locking in higher salaries for new staff on a permanent basis.

“Look at a contract solution, or look at rejigging the people that you have today, and their roles and responsibilities,” Mr Jones said.

“You can also look at the variable component of somebody’s compensation, so it’s not all upfront or base salary money.”

Robert Half’s research, which was conducted in June and focuses on administration, accounting and technology roles, also surveyed 1019 office workers from across Australia.

More than one-third (38 per cent) said they felt underpaid, while 31 per cent believed they were being paid less than new hires in a similar role. Of those considering changing jobs, 48 per cent cited a low salary as their top reason to move.

In response, about 60 per cent of business leaders are conducting regular pay audits and adjusting the pay of existing employees in line with market rates, the Robert Half research shows.

More than half (54 per cent) are basing pay on a worker’s skills and responsibilities rather than their location; and 49 per cent are publishing salary ranges in new job postings.

Rome2rio CEO Yesh Munnangi says companies must promote their non-financial benefits to avoid paying over the odds for new hires. Louis Trerise

Yesh Munnangi, CEO of travel booking platform Rome2rio, said his company avoided paying over the odds for new starters this year by using non-financial benefits, such as learning opportunities and a good work culture, to encourage people to join. Over the past eight months the company increased its headcount from 40 to almost 70.

“The value proposition from our perspective is not just the pay, it is the product they work on, the technology that is interesting, the culture of the company, and the benefits that we also give as a travel business for going out and travelling internationally,” Mr Munnangi said.

Having faith in what the company could offer new staff gave Mr Munnangi the confidence to turn down prospective hires when they asked for too much money. He said this meant Rome2rio avoided creating a situation where new hires were being paid much more than existing employees.

But, to remain competitive and reward staff for their loyalty, Mr Munnangi said the company also conducted a special pay audit in June – on top of its regular annual audit in January – to ensure its salaries were comparable with market rates being driven up by strong demand for talent.

Over the year to February, 1.3 million workers, or 9.5 per cent of employed people, changed jobs according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It was the highest annual job mobility rate since 2012.

Eagles Complete Comeback To Topple Bobcats - goeags.com

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
The grit and toughness were on display for Eastern Washington volleyball on Friday night, as they defeated Montana State, 3-2[25-22, 26-28, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11]. The Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Bobcats for the first time in five seasons.

Eastern Washington improves to 4-6 in conference and 9-13 overall this season. Montana State falls to 5-6 in the Big Sky and 9-14 overall.

"I think we saw our focus all night long in taking care of our effort and attitude on the court. It propelled us to that fifth set," head coach Jon Haruguchi said. "In the fifth set, we took care of our game behind the service line. We did a nice job there and put pressure on [Montana State]. We want to have a balanced attack. I think that in the first couple of sets, our left sides were having some trouble. We told them to keep going and fighting and they really stepped up towards the end of the game."

Ka'ehukaiiha'amaina'e Keala was a major factor in the win, notching her first career double-double.

"It feels amazing. and we've never beaten Montana State while I've been here," Keala explained. "Credit to my teammates and coaches with what we do every day in practice. It's following the game plan. It's not what [the opponents] are doing, but what we do to prepare. It's been a different season for me, especially in my senior season. My teammates make me better every day. I think the biggest thing that they tell me is to not hold back and don't be afraid to take risks. They are my biggest motivators."

Beginning in the first set, the two teams swung aggressively and the score was close early on. Alyssa Radke picked up where she left off from Thursday night, with two quick kills. The score was tied at nine, before a Bobcat error and another kill from Radke would give Eastern the lead. MSU regained the lead with a 4-0 run and forced an Eagle timeout. Eastern did continue to attack well, getting kills from Sage Brustad and Renata Lopez Morales. After the Bobcats had built a 19-16 lead, the Eagles would rally to tie the game at 20. Lopez Morales provided a kill and a block assist with Keala. MSU would pull ahead, 22-20, but the Eagles still had a run in them. Eastern rallied with a 5-0 burst to take the set 25-22 and a 1-0 lead in the game. The run was sparked by two service aces from Leah McAdams.

In the set, the Eagles hit .159 and held MSU to a .100 stat line.

Going to the second, Eastern looked to keep the momentum going. After falling behind 4-2, the Eagles managed to tie the set up at five on a kill from Keala. Brustad would deliver an ace on the next serve to give the Eagles the lead. The set stayed close as the Bobcats did not back down and would retake the lead quickly. MSU would push its advantage out to 14-11 and they continued to hold Eastern at arm's length. Sadie Bacon found her swing and delivered two kills for the Eagles to keep the score close. Eastern pulled within one of the Eagles at 20-19, following a 3-0 run, highlighted by a solo block from Lopez Morales. The teams traded points and ended up tied at 24. A Bobcat attack error gave Eastern a chance at set point, but they could not convert. A kill form Brustad would give the Eagles another chance, but again were unable to end the set. MSU then went on a 3-0 run to win the set, 28-26, and tie the game at one.

Eastern had a .195 attack percentage in the set. The Bobcats had a .294 percentage.

With the game now tied, Eastern and MSU both looked to gain the early edge. The Bobcats were in front early, with a 6-3 lead. MSU would build its lead to 12-7 as they continued to serve effectively. Brustad and Radke continued to attack and tried to keep the Bobcats in striking distance. Despite the effort, MSU continued to extend the lead, getting it to 17-11 and forcing a timeout from the Eagles. A 5-2 stretch would get Eastern within three, using kills from Bacon and Keala. MSU countered with a 6-3 stretch win the set, 25-19, and they had a 2-1 lead in the game.

The Eagles improved to hit .209 in the set, but MSU fired off a .326 attack percentage.

Facing the 2-1 deficit, Eastern came out determined to tie the game. The Eagles opened with an 8-5 lead, getting two kills from Brustad. MSU would tie the game at eight, but Eastern quickly got the lead back with a kill from Brustad. Eastern would build some separation from MSU at 14-11 on another kill from Radke. The score tightened up as the Bobcats' offense was effective. Late in the set, the score was tied six times. At 23 all, Bacon delivered a clutch kill for the lead. MSU would commit an attack error on the next point and the Eagles won the set, 25-23, tying the game up at two.

Eastern had a .167 attack percentage in the fourth set, while the Bobcats hit only .140.

Tied up, the game went to the fifth set and MSU jumped out early with a 4-2 lead. At 6-3 Bobcats, the Eagles fired off a 3-0 run to tie the set up. Eastern had kills from Keala and Brustad, along with an ace from McAdams. The Bobcats built the lead back up to 10-8, but eastern tied the set up at 10. Radke and Keala carried the Eagles down the finishing stretch, each recording two kills. Bacon delivered the clinching kill and Eastern won the game 3-2 after a 15-11 win in the fifth set. Eastern had its best hitting set in the fifth, finishing with a .276 percentage. MSU hit .192 in the final set.

The Eagles had a .196 attack percentage for the game and the Bobcats hit .210.

2022 World Series: Phillies complete historic comeback in Game 1 win - FOX Sports

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Game 1 of the 2022 World Series was filled with excitement from start to finish, as the Philadelphia Phillies came back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Houston Astros 6-5 in extra innings.

The Phillies' victory marked the largest comeback by a National League team in a World Series game since 1956.

Here are the top plays from Game 1:

Phillies 6, Astros 5

The new Mr. October?

Phillies superstar Bryce Harper is playing in the World Series for the first time in his storied career. The FOX MLB broadcast crew took a look at what Harper will bring to the table as he gets set to play on baseball's biggest stage.

Verlander dealing early on

Justin Verlander started Game 1 of the World Series with a strikeout as he caught Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber looking.

Verlander wins Round 1 in the battle between MVPs

The Astros ace got Harper to whiff on three fastballs in the second inning for the K.

Houston strikes first

The first run of the 2022 World Series went to the Astros. Kyle Tucker took Aaron Nola yard on a solo shot to right to make it 1-0.

Kyle Tucker puts the Astros on the board with first homer of the World Series

Kyle Tucker homered to right field for the first run of the night for the Houston Astros.

Hit, run and score

Martin Maldonado and the Astros executed the hit-and-run to perfection. As Chas McCormick took off for second, Maldonado hit the ball where the second baseman would've been. The base hit scored Yuli Gurriel to give Houston a 2-0 lead.

A Peña to get out

Jeremy Peña fought off a 1-2 count before he took Nola's sinker the opposite way for a leadoff double in the third.

Two for Tucker

Kyle Tucker made a strong and early case to win World Series MVP with his three-run homer in the third. It was Tucker's second home run of the night, giving the Astros a 5-0 lead.

Digging out a run

The Phillies scored their first run of the series when Nick Castellanos somehow made contact with Verlander's slider low-and-away.

Bringing 'em home

Alec Bohm brought in two more runs and cut into the Astros' lead, making it 5-3 in the fourth inning.

Tie game

J.T. Realmuto's double scored both runners on base to tie the game up in the fifth after the Phillies were down 5-0.

Bohm does it all

After his two-run double helped cut into the Astros' lead earlier in the game, Bohm made sure the game remained tied with his strong play at third base to end the sixth inning.

Taco time!

Kyle Schwarber stole second base in the seventh inning, meaning Taco Bell will give away free tacos to those who have their app.

In the 10 prior World Series that Taco Bell has run the promotion, the team that stole a base first has gone 8-2.

Slick steal

Jose Altuve's bloop single got him on base with two outs in the ninth. Then, he narrowly stole second base to get into scoring position.

Not on Nick's watch

Peña looked like he won the game for the Astros. But Castellanos slid to make the catch and prevent Altuve from scoring.

Starting the 10th off with a bang!

Realmuto stepped to the plate in the top of the 10th and drilled a solo home run to deep right, giving the Phillies a 6-5 lead.

Ballgame

After a pair of Astros players got on base and into scoring position, David Robertson fell into a 3-0 hole against Aledmys Diaz. However, Robertson bounced back and got Diaz to eventually ground out to end the game and give the Phillies a 1-0 series lead.

myenergi launches libbi battery to complete the home energy ecosystem - Automotive World

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

myenergi, the eco-smart technology manufacturer recently recognised as one of the UK’s top 10 fastest growing companies, is continuing its growth into new markets with the launch of its own home battery, called libbi.

A new product for the Lincolnshire-based company, libbi will sit alongside eddi (the smart solar diverter) and zappi (the world’s first solar EV smart charger) in myenergi’s eco-smart product line-up, and crucially, will allow customers to complete their home energy ecosystem, helping them to maximise self-consumption from their own renewable generation and significantly reduce energy costs.

Jordan Brompton, co-founder and CMO of myenergi, said: “We are incredibly excited to bring a smart home battery to the UK market. Around one million homes in the UK now have solar panels, and as electric vehicles sales continue to rise and the transition to electric heating accelerates, we know that there will be huge growth in domestic renewable generation and demand for battery storage to maximise it.”

The myenergi libbi home battery solution incorporates the battery, inverter and controller, allowing customers to complete their domestic energy ecosystem. Like all myenergi products, libbi is eco smart, making intelligent decisions about when it provides and stores electricity based on how much energy is used, how much is generated from solar and the customer’s electricity tariff. The hybrid battery system can adapt to a wide range of installation setups, accepting both solar and grid charging.

Unlike other home storage batteries, libbi will allow customers to prioritise loads as they wish within the myenergi app, for example to avoid the battery discharging automatically when they plug in their electric car, or conversely, to charge their EV directly from their home battery when their zappi is in ECO+ mode.

The modular design uses 5.1kWh battery packs, scalable up to a total of 20.4kWh of storage, with either a 3.68kW or 5kW inverter. Customers can choose whether to charge the libbi from solar, grid energy, or a mixture of both – with the latter being optimised around a time-of-use or agile tariff.

Not only can storing cheaper off-peak electricity save customers money, by avoiding using more expensive energy at peak times; it also lessens the strain on the grid. In addition, the libbi is available with optional Blackout Backup, providing instant energy to a dedicated circuit in the event of a power cut.

While a study from the University of Oxford showed that average self-consumption – the amount of solar generation that a household actually ends up using – is around 45% in the UK, modelling by myenergi shows this rising to closer to 100% for a home energy ecosystem encompassing the eddi solar diverter, zappi EV charger and libbi home battery.

Lee Sutton, co-founder and CEO of myenergi, added: “We are committed to innovation and are excited to deliver technologies that help our customers gain more autonomy over their energy. Our libbi home battery will help our customers complete their own energy ecosystem, enabling them to become less reliant on electricity supplied from the grid and become more energy independent, in order to both reduce energy costs and reduce their own carbon footprint.”

A 4kW domestic solar array would typically generate around 3,500kWh of electricity per year – enough energy to drive more than 10,000 miles in an electric car – so if more of this energy can be stored and used by the household, it will have significant benefits in decarbonising vehicles and homes.

Soybean harvest 80% complete, USDA says - Successful Farming

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

The United States Department of Agriculture released its 30th Crop Progress report of the growing season Monday afternoon. These reports run weekly through the end of November and look at the progress and condition of various crops on a national and state-by-state scale.

CORN

As of Oct. 23, 97% of the corn crop has reached maturity, right on track with the five-year average.

Corn harvest leapt over 15 points from last week to 61% complete. The five-year average for this point in the season is 52%.

Map of the 2022 corn harvest progress as of 10-23-22.

SOYBEANS

As of Oct. 23, soybean harvest is 80% complete, well ahead of the five-year average of 67%.

Map of the 2022 soybean harvest progress as of 10-23-22.

WHEAT

This week, USDA reports 79% of winter wheat has been planted. This is up 10% from last week and slightly ahead the five-year average of 78%.

Winter wheat's emergence is at 49%, behind the five-year average of 56%.

Top Soil Moisture

According to USDA, 68% of the top soil in the 48 continental states is short or very short of moisture. This is up from 65% the week before.

Subsoil moisture is also declining, with 66% short or very short.

About the report: Crop progress and condition estimates are based on survey data collected each week from early April through the end of November, according to the USDA. The non-probability crop progress and condition surveys include input from approximately 3,600 respondents whose occupations provide them opportunities to make visual observations and frequently bring them in contact with farmers in their counties. Most respondents complete the questionnaire on Friday or early Monday morning and submit them to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) field offices in their states by mail, telephone, fax, email, or through a secured internet website. A small number of reports are completed on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Regardless of when questionnaires are completed, respondents are asked to report for the entire week ending on Sunday, according to the Crop Progress Report.

What should I do if I witness a colleague sexually harassing another member of staff? - The BMJ

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
  1. Ingrid Torjesen
  1. The BMJ

Ingrid Torjesen finds out how to support a colleague who is the target of sexual banter or unwanted advances

Doctors need to know that they will be supported

Jo Wren, head of outreach for the General Medical Council, says, “Hearing accounts from people who were sexually assaulted by a colleague is harrowing and the GMC absolutely condemns such behaviour. There can be no place for misogyny, sexism, or any form of sexual harassment in the medical profession.

Good Medical Practice states that doctors must tackle discrimination and encourage their colleagues to do the same.1 Recently we consulted on updating this core guidance, setting out a zero tolerance approach to sexual harassment. It includes two explicit duties for doctors: they should find any form of abuse or discrimination unacceptable, and they must act and support others if they witness or learn of harassment, bullying or discrimination.

“Some doctors may find it hard to report a colleague’s inappropriate behaviour for fear that nothing will be done or that raising a concern may cause problems for colleagues or have a negative impact on your working relationships and career. That is why we have produced support materials to help doctors identify and tackle misconduct.2

“If you are hesitant to report a concern, you should bear in mind that you don’t need to wait for proof—you’ll be able to justify raising a concern if you do so honestly, based on a reasonable belief, and through appropriate channels, even if you’re mistaken.3

“It’s vital that leaders create safe and supportive working environments in which it’s the norm for doctors to call out a colleague’s unacceptable behaviour. Not only for doctors’ welfare, but also to empower doctors to express other concerns, so they know they’re being listened to and will be supported.”

Offer your support and a listening ear

Becky Cox, GP and co-founder of the Surviving in Scrubs campaign, says, “My first piece of advice is not to ignore it and carry on with your work duties. Check in with the colleague targeted. Ask how they are and how they feel about what just happened to them. Sexual harassment is often disguised as banter, and the person subject to it might not even recognise what happened to them.

“If the person feels comfortable, ask if this is something that has happened before. In many cases sexual harassment isn’t an isolated incident with either repeated attacks from the same person or a team harassing an individual.

“Offer your support and a listening ear. For your colleague, having a friendly and supportive team member can make a lot of difference.

“Ask if they want to report it. Having a witness can help with a complaint, but this is an individual decision so don’t pressure them. Whether or not to report is a tough decision; it’s not just the process of reporting and fear of reprisal from the perpetrator, but also relationships with other colleagues, career progression, and their wellbeing at stake.

“Importantly, thank them for sharing with you. Say that you believe them and do not share any details without consent.

“As a witness, if you are concerned there is a wider persistent pattern of sexual harassment in your team or department you can consider raising this with your supervisor, directorate, or hospital management without naming the people involved. This, however, can be difficult if the perpetrator or perpetrators are involved with any leadership teams. You can also seek advice from the BMA and your indemnity provider.”

Ask for any offensive comment to be repeated

Tamzin Cuming, chair of the Women in Surgery forum, Royal College of Surgeons of England, says, “In a BMA survey last year, 91% of women reported experiencing sexual harassment,4 so it’s very likely a doctor will witness, if not experience, sexual harassment.

“My first thought is for the victim. Be there to talk to and offer support, including with reporting, if they wish to. To help, there’s the Speak Up app,5 confidential helplines, and our website6 with details of legal advice and finding a sexual assault and rape centre.

“Keeping a contemporaneous private record of events is important, as is anonymously adding testimony to the Surviving in Scrubs website,7 which will be used to shake up the current culture that is permissive of sexual misconduct, improve reporting, and push for real consequences for perpetrators.

“There is an increased likelihood of sexual assault in a workplace where sexual harassment is tolerated—the perception of acceptability mattering more than any institutional rules. Speaking up—standing up for yourself as well as the victim—is something we all need to do.

“If you’re the focus of an offensive comment and aren’t in a position to push back directly, ask for it to be repeated. This draws attention to it and can bring support from others. You can also ask why it’s funny. Clearly stating that something said isn’t acceptable can serve as a warning.

“Many women’s decision to leave an intended career in surgery is likely to be because of either outright sexual misconduct or to the atmosphere created by a culture that does not welcome or respect women.”

With coaxing from former City Council colleague Mell, Tunney warms to joining crowded race for mayor - Chicago Sun-Times

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

With behind-the-scenes encouragement from perennial political power player Richard Mell, retiring Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) is warming to the possibility of joining the crowded field of candidates vying to replace Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

“He thinks I would be a good mayor. That’s all I can say,” Tunney, 67, said Monday.“He’s worked with me for years.”

Mell, 84, was uncharacteristically tight-lipped when asked what role he’s playing in trying to coax Tunney into the race.

“At this point, I’m not discussing that topic,” Mell said.“I’m not in a position to say anything about this now. Maybe later.”

Nine years after retiring from the Chicago City Council and passing the baton to his daughter, Mell was asked if he’s encouraging Tunney to run because he believes Chicago is at a crossroads.

He would only say: “Yes, we are.”

Former Ald. Richard Mell listens as his daughter, Ald. Deb Mell (33rd Ward) speaks during a Chicago City Council meeting in September 2013.

Former Ald. Richard Mell listens as his daughter, Ald. Deb Mell (33rd Ward) speaks during a Chicago City Council meeting in September 2013. He had retired earlier that year. Seated to his right is his daughter Patti Blagojevich.

Sun-Times file

Other political sources have said Mell has been telling everyone who will listen that Tunney is in and will announce his candidacy the day after the Nov. 8 general election.

Tunney refused to go quite that far during Monday’s conversation with the Sun-Times.

But he made it clear he is warming to the idea and firmly believes there is a “lane” for him to win.

“A middle-of-the-road, not overly progressive, not overly conservative [candidate]. But somebody who’s managed a very successful ward and also did a lot on the Council floor, collaborating. There’s a lane, if I so choose,” said Tunney, owner of Ann Sather Restaurants.

“I know I’ll have business support. If you look at the rest of the candidates, I think I have a unique resume,” he added. “If I get in, I will definitely be very aggressive on fundraising.”

With Tunney’s consent, supporters have been out with nominating petitions the last few weeks, hoping to gather two or three times the 12,500 signatures needed to get on the ballot and survive a petition challenge.

“It’s going very well. ... We have volunteers. We’ve got paid staff. We’re trying to cross the spectrum of the city,” said Tunney, Lightfoot’s hand-picked Zoning Committee chair.

Lightfoot has $2.9 million in the bank, followed by former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas, who is closing in on $2 million. Millionaire businessman Willie Wilson leads the hunt for campaign cash with $4.68 million in the bank. He has already devoted $6 million of his personal fortune to unseating the embattled incumbent he endorsed, and he said he is prepared to donate $3 million more.

Illinois Restaurant Association President Sam Toia has known Tunney, the association’s former chairman, for decades.

But Toia also has worked closely with Lightfoot, particularly during the pandemic, when the mayor closed streets and sidewalks to make way for more outdoor dining, throwing a lifeline to restaurants fighting for survival.

On Monday, Toia refused to say if he’d stay in Lightfoot’s camp, even if Tunney jumps in. He did say restaurant owners are pleased to have “been at the table instead of on the menu.”

With or without big bucks from the hospitality industry, Toia said Tunney’s candidacy could be a game-changer.

As Chicago’s first openly gay alderperson, he could cut into Lightfoot’s support in the LGBTQ community.

He could also hurt the mayor among lakefront voters whose support was crucial to Lightfoot’s 2019 win but who have grown disenchanted with her for not delivering on many progressive and transparency promises.

“There’s no question that Tom is someone that knows the city of Chicago. He grew up on the Southwest Side. He’s been a Chicagoan his whole life,” said Toia, and knows “the pulse of the hospitality industry, small business, development. He’s been an alderman dealing with all of these issues for the past 20 years.”

In August, Tunney hinted at his impending retirement from the Council, which he called “not a good place to work these days.”

He also teased a run for mayor, saying Chicagoans “want a unifier” and someone “who can bring people together.”

Lightfoot “can be somewhat divisive. She’s vulnerable. She knows that. A lot of people are looking for an alternative,” he said then.

“Her background as a prosecutor has some influence on the way she operates her office. ... It’s more like, ‘I’ve got all the answers, and we’re going my way.’ ... Her style is that of a prosecutor — you’re guilty until proven innocent. As a chief executive, she’s got to work more behind the scenes and be more collegial and respectful.”

For a generation of political junkies, Mell will be remembered for his jump-on-the-desk antics the night the Council chose Ald. Eugene Sawyer (6th) to succeed the late Mayor Harold Washington.

The infamous photograph that’s part of Chicago folklore captured the deal-making essence of Mell’s personality.

Although Mell was a self-made millionaire, he put aside his own political ambitions to advance the career of his son-in-law, Rod Blagojevich, first to the state legislature, then to Congress and the governor’s mansion.

In 2009, Gov. Blagojevich was impeached and removed from office, and in 2011 was convicted on federal corruption charges.

Even before then, in 2005, Mell had gone on a tirade after Blagojevich’s aides publicly linked him to a Joliet landfill that was shut down amid environmental violations.

The landfill was owned by a second cousin of Patti Blagojevich, the alderman’s daughter and governor’s wife.

Mell told the Sun-Times he regretted the day he backed Blagojevich for governor and hoped his daughter — who had “blinders on” about her husband — would “wake up someday.”

He compared himself to a spurned spouse who works tirelessly to put her husband through medical school, only to be replaced by a trophy wife.

Then, he dropped a bombshell that tore his family apart and drew the attention of state and federal investigators.

Mell charged that the governor’s chief fund-raiser, Chris Kelly, had traded prime state appointments for $50,000 donations to Blagojevich.

The alderman later recanted the charges under threat of a lawsuit by Kelly, who subsequently committed suicide after his own federal conviction. But the damage was done.

Mell would ultimately be vindicated by the conviction of his son-in-law. But he endured the emotional pain of watching his granddaughters grow up without their father.
