DETROIT -- Starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval fired the first complete game shutout of his career -- and just the eighth in all of baseball this season -- as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on Friday night at Comerica Park.
The Tigers (45-76) have two more against the Angels (52-67) this weekend.
Sandoval allowed just four singles, didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine Tigers. He did it all with just 98 pitches.
Tigers starter Matt Manning tied a career-high by going seven innings (the second time he’s done so this month). He allowed just three hits and struck out six batters while walking just one.
His only run allowed was a home run by Jared Walsh in the second inning, a line-drive shot that landed just a foot or two inside the right-field foul pole.
“The reality of his outing is one change-up stayed out over the plate and a pretty good home run hitter hit a ball down the line for a homer,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “I mean, if that’s your only mistake in a seven-inning outing, with Ohtani and Trout in the lineup, that’s a pretty good outcome. I’m very proud of his effort. We just couldn’t capitalize on his good night.”
Tigers starters lead the American League and rank third in the Majors with a 3.09 ERA since July 21.
The crowd of 28,197 was treated to postgame fireworks, perhaps making up for the fact that they saw so few during the game. They also came to see Angels stars Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, who combined to go 1-for-7 with four strikeouts.
Friday was also Fiesta Tigres night. The Tigers’ Latin players were honored before the game.

The Tigers and Angels meet again on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. Tigers lefty Tyler Alexander (2-7, 3.98 ERA) will face Angels lefty Reid Detmers (4-3, 3.45).
