A 90-year-old advisor will appear in court next month after allegedly shooting a business partner at a Morgan Stanley office in Oklahoma City.
The advisor, former Morgan Stanley employee Leonard Bernstein, was booked on June 30 and charged with one count of shooting with intent to kill, Oklahoma City police records show. He was released on a $50,000 bond. His mugshot is shown above.
Witnesses told investigators that Bernstein worked with the alleged victim for nine months and had handed his accounts over to his business partner, according to local news reports. The specific motive, however, is unclear.
Police reported finding one person shot multiple times when they arrived at the scene. Bernstein reportedly fled the scene in his vehicle and was later apprehended during a traffic stop.
Law enforcement said the victim, later identified as 61-year-old Christopher Bayouth, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. Bayouth remains alive as of Tuesday morning, according to police.
The case is assigned to District Court Judge Kevin McCray, whose office confirmed that an arraignment hearing is set for August 26.
A 28-year industry veteran, Bernstein first registered as an advisor with Morgan Stanley in 1994, leaving for Citigroup Global Markets a decade later. He then returned to Morgan Stanley, was part of group that joined Wells Fargo, and re-registered as an advisor and broker with Morgan Stanley in 2021.
Bayouth has been registered as a broker since 1988. He first registered as an investment advisor with Morgan Stanley in 2001. Bayouth is listed on the branch website as a vice president and financial advisor, specializing in estate planning, investment advice and retirement planning.
Both advisors have their business address listed as 6305 Waterford Blvd. in Oklahoma City.
A Morgan Stanley spokesperson said that Bernstein was terminated from the company on Friday. ‘We are cooperating with the authorities and our thoughts are with our employee,’ the spokesperson told Citywire in a statement.
