Pro Recco vs. Barceloneta
Team USA center Ben Hallock and Pro Recco lost a close game to Brescia in the Italian League final to even the best-of-three series, 1-1. Fighting for their playoff lives, Brescia came out strong to lead early 1-0 and 2-1. Pro Recco had an answer, three unanswered goals to be exact, to take a 4-2 lead. Edoardo Di Somma, Vicenzo Renzuto Iodice, and Vicenzo Dolce all converted for Brescia in the second quarter to give the hosts a 7-6 lead at the break. After halftime, Aaron Younger scored on a man advantage and Gergo Zalanki netted two penalty shots for the visitors as Pro Recco earned a 10-8 lead heading into the final frame. The fourth period began with the sides trading goals until Brescia held Pro Recco scoreless over the last four minutes. The hosts capitalized on the scoring drought as Dolce equalized with 96 seconds to go and Renzuto Iodice converted on a power play with 51 seconds remaining to solidify the win, 13-12.
The result led to a winner take all Game 3 in the series. In the final game back at Piscina Punta Sant'Anna, Pro Recco and Brescia flexed their defensive muscles. Pro Recco's captain, Aleksandar Ivovic, opened the scoring in the second minute by converting a penalty shot. That was the only goal from either side in the first half. With 27 seconds remaining in the third period, left hander Gonzalo Echenique doubled the host's lead to make it 2-0 heading into the fourth quarter. Pro Recco earned a man-up advantage on the first possession of the fourth and Zalanki capitalized to make it 3-0. After nearly 26 minutes of game time, Brescia finally got on the board with a power play goal of their own from Renzuto Iodice making the score 3-1 in favor of Pro Recco. The hosts put the game away at the hands of Nicholas Presciutti and Francesco Di Fulvio to push the lead to 5-1 before Brescia's Di Somma scored from a penalty shot to change nothing but the final score, 5-2 for Pro Recco.
With the victory, Pro Recco has won its 34th Italian League title and finished the domestic season with a "double crown," as it won the Italian Cup earlier this year. The team will travel to Belgrade on a quick turnaround to compete in The Champions League Final Eight beginning on Thursday. Pro Recco has a date with Barceloneta in the quarterfinals.
