6 Things You Must Do Right After You’ve E-Met A New Colleague - Forbes

Online networking may not seem as meaningful or exciting as connecting with people in person, but it’s pretty much all we have right now. Because you aren’t able to host those human and visceral in-person connections, you need to make more effort to build a solid connection. To make e-connections more impactful, have a plan for what you’ll do after you’ve hit “leave meeting” and ended that initial screen-to-screen interaction. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Stalk them. Well, don’t go that far. But DO connect with them in a friendly way. Follow them in all relevant social media, if you didn’t already do this when you were researching them before the meeting. Make sure you do this for LinkedIn—the world’s biggest online professional networking platform. You want to have all your professional connections in one place and for most of us, LinkedIn should be that place. Doing this helps you stay on top of what they are doing so they can stay top of mind for you.

2. Reach out to recap. Send an email to express your appreciation for having connected, and recap anything you said you’d do or provide any information you said you’d share (like the name of that amazing Netflix series that just didn’t come to mind during your meeting).

3. Act on the actions. Add into your calendar the actions you said you’d take when you were meeting. If you said you’d connect them with one of your contacts or you agreed to set up a follow-on video meeting, do it.

4. Add them to your “tribe” list. With their permission, add them to your emailing list (you do have one, don’t you?) so you can stay in touch with them passively but remain in their purview. Just make sure whatever you share in your newsletter or regular updates is highly valuable to them.

5. Give. Based on your conversation, identify the most valuable thing you can offer your new contact. Can you connect them with someone in your network? Share content they created online with your connections? Offer them advice, support, resources? Promote something that’s important to them?

6. Pen in times for a reconnect. Since relationships are built over multiple interactions over time, create the next opportunity to further grow your relationship. We all have the best intentions for staying in touch with the people we meet, but things get in the way, time passes and memory fades. If you talked about reconnecting in your meeting, create the meeting invitation so that next important step in your relationship gets into your calendar and is not lost in your busyness.

Building relationships on the two-dimensional screen of your laptop or phone takes extra effort and steadfast commitment to growing your network. And just like with a golf swing, the follow through is as important as hitting the ball. So maximize your meeting by ensuring that the follow-up is as powerful and memorable as your initial introduction.
