Paramedics are hailing a construction crew who used a makeshift tourniquet to stop the bleeding when a colleague’s arm was severely slashed by a broken mirror.

The man in his early 30s was moving a large mirror while at work on a home renovation project Tuesday afternoon when the mirror shattered, the Ottawa Paramedic Service said Wednesday.
Shards of glass severed the brachial artery in the man’s upper arm and he was losing significant amounts of blood.
Colleagues called 911 and used fabric and a pencil to fashion the tourniquet.
Arriving paramedics applied a medical-grade tourniquet and gauze to stop the hemorrhage and gave the man intravenous fluids. He was taken to hospital in serious condition.
“We would like to commend the quick actions taken by this patient’s coworkers, who were able to promptly provide lifesaving first aid treatments to this injured person, which resulted in a successful outcome,” the paramedic service said.
“If someone was experiencing severe blood loss in front of you, would you know what to do?” the service added, pointing the public to its first aid classes , which include how to handle this kind of emergency.
