Downtown Alma art mural complete - The Morning Sun

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

A project in the works for more than a year was completed this past weekend at the downtown Alma Community Art Center.

A 20-foot-by-60-mural on the building’s east exterior wall in the alley facing the Strand Theater was finished by Detroit area artist Chazz Miller, who was commissioned for the job last year.

He designed the mural with input from the community.

Millers’ goal was to design something that “touched people’s hearts.”

His artwork has been exhibited throughout the world.

Miller was assisted by project manager Amy Edgar Wellington, an Alma native who is the art share director for Michigan State University Extension.

Also, about 75 community members were given the opportunity to use their artistic abilities to help out, as well as participants in the center’s annual summer Youth Art Camp.

From the time Miller unveiled his design during a special event at the art center on July 24, it took him about three weeks to complete.

The ACAC, located at 213 E. Superior St., and the Keep Alma Beautiful Committee collaborated on the project.

KAB was awarded a $5,600 grant from the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs to help fund the mural.

The city has vacated the alley and plans eventually call for it to be resurfaced, and new lighting and picnic tables to be added.

Community members had the chance to place some of the finishing touches on the mural by adding their thumb prints and painting small butterflies.

The ACAC and KAB are planning other downtown art projects in the future.
