Upgrades to Beardstown sewage plant complete - Jacksonville Journal-Courier

BEARDSTOWN — Upgrades to Beardstown Sanitary District’s sewage plant have been completed.

The wastewater treatment plant has a new system and now is a full biological nutrient removal plant, said Wells Petersen, the district’s superintendent.

There also is a sludge-handling facility where sludge can be dried. Solid material is easier to haul than liquid.

The new system meets Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, including new guidelines that require testing for phosphorus limit and ammonia limit, Petersen said.

The upgrades cost around $13 million and were funded in part through a USDA Rural Development loan and grants. The actual cost to the public is around $9 million, covered by sewage rates over a 40-year period.

“The water going out to the river is much cleaner than before,” Petersen said. “This plant does an excellent job in removing nutrients.”

The upgraded plant also has more capacity. In a storm, it will be able to handle more storm flow than before and help with storm water removal in the community, Petersen said.

“We’re able to move more water faster and (move) more of it,” he said. “It also helps provide a cleaner wastewater going to the river.”

The new plant also is energy efficient.

The old plant was 40 years old and this plant also is expected to last another 40 years, he said.

“We’re really happy with our system so far,” Petersen said. “This plant is a big upgrade for the environment and our community.”
