The local Palos Verdes Peninsula school board will appoint a successor for their late colleague who died suddenly earlier this month, rather than call for a special election to fill the seat.
Those interested in serving on the Board of Education for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District have until 4 p.m. May 12 to submit an application.
Jeff Frankel — known as a passionate advocate for the students, especially those with special needs — died on April 3, five month after the November general election during which he won his first term on the school board. His cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
The board voted last week to appoint a successor and is scheduled to discuss candidates on May 19. The eventual appointee will serve until December 2022. The board’s next scheduled election, in November 2022, would feature Franke’s and three other seats. The winners of the seats currently held by President Matthew Brach, Vice President Megan Crawford and board member Richard Phillips will serve four-year terms; the winner of Frankel’s seat will serve two years.
Had the school board opted for a special election this year, the winner would have served Frankel’s entire term, set to end in 2024.
The board has until June 3 to either appoint a new board member or order an election to fill the vacancy. So the board could still call a special election if it can’t agree on an appointee.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside within the boundaries of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and be registered to vote in California. They also must not be disqualified from holding civil office by the constitution or any state law, a school district press release said.
Applications are available on the district’s website or at its headquarters, 375 Via Almar, in Palos Verdes Estates.
