China's new space station will need 10 more launches to complete - Space.com

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

China's core space station module is now circling Earth.

The module, called Tianhe ("Harmony of the Heavens"), launched Wednesday night (April 28) atop a Long March-5B Y2 carrier rocket from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the northeastern coast of south China's Hainan Province.

Tianhe is the foundational module for China's first space station. The module is billed as the largest spacecraft the nation has ever developed; it's 54.4 feet (16.6 meters) long, 13.8 feet (4.2 m) across at its widest point, and had a mass at liftoff of 22.5 tons.

Fast-paced launch schedule

Wednesday's launch will be followed by a fast-paced series of cargo and crew launches aimed at completing the construction of the space station by the end of 2022.

The space-based construction effort requires 10 additional launches from 2021 through 2022: two more module launches, four crewed missions and four cargo vessel flights, as reported by China Global Television Network (CGTN).

Three types of Long March carrier rockets will jointly launch the remaining 10 missions.

When completed, China's orbiting outpost will form a T-shape with Tianhe at the center and two other modules, Wentian and Mengtian, on each side, according to Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China's crewed space program.

Bai Linhou, deputy chief designer of the space station at the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), said that the station could support at most six astronauts at the same time. Regular launches of crewed and cargo spaceships will secure a long-term human presence in Earth orbit to carry out research and services, Chinese officials have said.

Crew and cargo

Shortly after the core module's launch, Li Shangfu, chief commander of flight missions for the space station phase of China's crewed space program, reported the Long March-5B Y2 rocket had accurately sent Tianhe into a preset orbit, and that the module's solar panels were working well after unfolding. "Now I announce that the launch mission of the core module Tianhe is a complete success!" Li said.

Hao Chun, director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office, told China Central Television (CCTV): "Next, we will launch Tianzhou 2 cargo spacecraft in May and the Shenzhou 12 spacecraft in June. Three astronauts will stay in orbit for three months on the Shenzhou 12 manned spacecraft."

Hao said that the Tianzhou 3 cargo craft will launch toward Tianhe this September and the Shenzhou 13 crewed spaceship will follow in October. Shenzhou 13 will carry three astronauts, who will stay on Tianhe for six months.

China plans to launch six more station-building missions in 2022. These will loft the Wentian and Mengtian lab modules, two cargo spacecraft and two crewed spaceships, completing the assembly of the orbiting outpost.

"The two manned spacecraft, also composed of three astronauts respectively, will stay in orbit for about six months," Hao said, referring to the 2022 crewed flights. "This is the general arrangement of our missions."

China's space station is to operate in low Earth orbit at an altitude from 211 miles (340 kilometers) to 280 miles (450 km). It has a designed lifespan of 10 years, although it could last more than 15 years with appropriate maintenance and repairs, CCTV reported.

You can view video of the Tianhe launch and get an overview of China's space station plans here, here and here.

25-year Orlandoversary: Magic hold off Pistons to complete first sweep in franchise history - Orlando Pinstriped Post

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

The first two trips to the postseason for the Orlando Magic unfortunately ended in sweeps.

After making their first playoff appearance during the 1993-94 season, the Magic were swept in the first round by the Indiana Pacers in three games. The next year, Orlando went all the way to the NBA Finals, but were swept in four games by the Houston Rockets.

On this day 25 years ago, the Magic finally got to do the sweeping. Orlando closed out the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs with a 101-98 victory.

The first two games of the best-of-five series in Orlando weren’t close. The Magic won by 20 and 15 over Detroit, but it was a different story as the series shifted to the Palace of Auburn Hills on April 30, 1996.

For a large portion of the night, it looked as though it might be much of the same. The Magic led by nine after one and by 11 after three quarters, but with pride and their season on the line, the Pistons made things interesting.

Down 81-70 to start the final period, Detroit would have to finish without head coach Doug Collins who had been ejected late in the third. The combination of Allan Houston and Grant Hill got the Pistons going.

Detroit was able to whittle away at the lead, eventually drawing to within two on a three-point play by Hill with just 36 seconds remaining. It appeared as though Detroit had got the stop it needed on the other end as Anfernee Hardaway hoisted one toward the rim for Orlando with the shot clock winding down.

It was unclear whether the ball touched the rim, but officials ruled it did and Horace Grant was able to put it back in for Orlando to push the lead to 99-95 with just 11 seconds remaining. Houston answered for Detroit with a three-pointer on the other end to cap a 33-point night, but his tying three-point attempt, following a pair of free throws from Orlando’s Nick Anderson, was no good.

Houston led all scorers while Hill added 17 points in the loss. Joe Dumars and Otis Thorpe each tallied 15 points in the loss. Thorpe grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.

It was a balanced effort for the Magic, who had all five starters score in double figures.

Hardaway led the way with 24 points with 16 of those coming during a big third quarter. Nick Anderson and Dennis Scott tallied 22 and 18 points, respectively, while combining to make five of Orlando’s seven three-pointers. Shaquille O’Neal had an uncharacteristically bad shooting night, finishing with 13 points on 4-for-13 from the field.

The Magic would go on to beat the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals before getting swept for the third straight year – this time by the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Since the 1995-96 season, Orlando has completed two sweeps. The first and only three-game sweep for the Magic however, wrapped up on this day a quarter-century ago.

Here's a complete list of destinations opening to vaccinated travelers - CNBC

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

The list of places that's welcoming vaccinated people is growing by the week.

Proof of vaccines is easing travel restrictions to some places, and is the only way travelers can gain entrance to others.

Yet from health forms to testing protocols, travel remains complicated even for the immunized. Rules differ from one country to the next. Some places reject certain types of vaccines, while others still require a quarantine period — often shortened.

Travelers almost always have to be fully vaccinated — which is commonly defined as two weeks following the last required dose. However, several places allow travel the same day as a second shot.

So travelers should read the fine print before booking a trip abroad, which includes understanding Covid-19 protocols that may be stricter than what’s required at home.

The U.S. CDC may have eased mask rules for fully vaccinated Americans who are outside, but other places, such as Greece, have not.
Stefan Cristian Cioata | Moment | Getty Images

A study by the rental search engine HomeToGo showed 54% of U.S. travelers plan on taking a trip within the first two months of getting vaccinated. Yet, the rise of Covid variants is complicating matters.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends against traveling to all but 31 destinations in the world. The 31 places are under the CDC's Level 1 travel advisory, which indicates the risk for Covid is low there.

Only four of those places are on the list below, so a sizable chasm remains between where vaccinated travelers can go and where they’re recommended to go.

U.S. CDC Travel Recommendations by Destination

Level 1: Low — Travelers should wear masks, avoid crowds, etc.
Level 2: Moderate — Avoid all nonessential travel.
Level 3: High — Avoid all nonessential travel.
Level 4: Very high — Avoid all travel.

To be clear, vaccinated travelers can still contract Covid-19 (and possibly transmit it), so researching infection and vaccination rates at intended destinations is also advisable.

CNBC Global Traveler will update this list as new information is made public.

The Caribbean

  • Anguilla (temporarily closed)

Just 10 days after Anguilla halved its stay-in-place requirements for vaccinated travelers from 14 to seven days, the island closed its borders for two weeks due to a coronavirus outbreak. The British territory, which had just 18 total Covid cases as of early March 2021, confirmed 62 new cases in the past two weeks, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Anguilla had previously announced that from May 1, incoming groups of 10 or more will be required to be vaccinated, and spa and gym services are allowed only if guests and staff are fully vaccinated. Starting July 1, everyone who is eligible to take a vaccine must be inoculated to enter.

Travel Level: 1

  • Barbados

Starting May 8, Barbados is reducing quarantine requirements for vaccinated travelers to zero to two days. Children under 18 years old traveling with vaccinated parents are also allowed to enter. Vaccinated travelers traveling with unvaccinated companions must quarantine for a week or more if they choose to stay together.

Travel Level: 4

  • Belize

Travelers can enter Belize if they test negative before or after arriving; vaccinated visitors needn’t test though.

Travel Level: 2

  • British Virgin Islands

Starting May 15, travelers can avoid quarantine in the British Virgin Islands for four days if they test negative before and after arriving (results are estimated to take 24 hours), according to a press release. They must also provide evidence of an “approved” vaccine — such as AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson, it said.

  • Grenada

From May 1, vaccinated travelers will still need to test negative before and after arriving in Grenada and its dependent territories of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Quarantine periods will be reduced from a week to no more than 48 hours, if they are vaccinated.

Travel Level: 1

North America

  • Hawaii

Starting May 11, Hawaii residents can travel between islands without Covid-19 tests or quarantines if they have been vaccinated in Hawaii. The state is expected to loosen entrance requirements for vaccinated travelers from the mainland United States later this summer.

Travel Level: N/A

French Polynesia

  • Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea and other "Islands of Tahiti"

Visitors need a "compelling reason" to visit French Polynesia (colloquially referred to as "The Islands of Tahiti") during the pandemic. From May 1, this reason can be for the purposes of tourism if travelers have been in the United States for 30 days before arriving, according to new guidelines that cite the "low circulation of Covid-19" in the U.S.

"We are expecting this requirement to evolve as the Covid-19 situation improves in other countries," Kristin Carlson, managing director of the country's tourism marketing organization said.

American residents eligible to travel to French Polynesia are charged less for on-island Covid tests if they are vaccinated ($50 versus $120).

Vaccinated travelers can avoid French Polynesia's 10-day quarantine, but families with kids may be subject to it.

"Children 6 years old and older who are not vaccinated, nor immune or who test positive to the antigenic test will be quarantined, as well as the entire family with whom they are traveling," said Carlson.

Travel Level: 3

Europe

  • The European Union bloc

Some vaccinated travelers are expected to be welcome into the European Union this summer.

“All 27 member states will accept, unconditionally, all those who are vaccinated with vaccines that are approved by EMA,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told The New York Times this week, referencing the drug-regulating European Medicines Agency

The agency has approved vaccines made by Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.

Nothing official has been announced yet. If the EU allows vaccinated travelers into the bloc, member states are free to impose additional testing and quarantine requirements.

Some countries in Europe have separately announced or indicated plans to welcome vaccinated travelers, including:

  • Croatia

Options abound here. Fully vaccinated travelers can enter without quarantine, as can those with negative Covid tests or proof of a past Covid infection. Everyone else can test upon arrival or self-isolate for 10 days. Tourists coming from outside of Europe’s Schengen zone must also show proof of payment for their hotel or accommodation to get into Croatia.

Travel Level: 4

  • Cyprus

From May 10, travelers from most of Europe, the United States, Canada, Russia and other countries can bypass Covid testing protocols if they are vaccinated with Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine or vaccines approved by the EMA. Vaccinated travelers aren’t subject to quarantines even if they are close contacts with a positive Covid case, and vaccine protocols kick in the same day a vaccine is fully administered. Vaccine certificates, which must be uploaded before departure, are to be verified by border control services in the country of departure.

Travel Level: 4

  • Estonia

Estonia allows travelers to avoid testing and 10-day quarantines if they’ve had Covid-19 or been vaccinated against the coronavirus in the past six months. Proof of vaccination can be shown by an immunization passport or certificate, and vaccines approved in a traveler’s country of residence or departure are accepted.

Travel Level: 4

  • France

French President Emmanuel Macron told “Face the Nation” on CBS News this month that the country will begin easing travel restrictions in May and is “working hard to propose a very concrete solution, especially for U.S. citizens who are vaccinated” by this summer.

Travel Level: 4

  • Georgia

All fully vaccinated travelers can enter Georgia if two requirements are met: they must enter by air and have not been in India in the past 14 days. India is experiencing a deadly second wave, which started in February.

Travel Level: 4

  • Greece

Greece is now welcoming travelers who present a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test or vaccination certificate upon arrival. Vaccines made in “third countries” such as Russia and China — which have not been approved by the EMA — are accepted. However, only residents of Europe, the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Serbia, United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, Rwanda, Singapore and Russia can enter without isolating.

Though the Acropolis has reopened, Greece is currently under lockdown-type restrictions with a nighttime curfew and store and restaurant closures.

Russian travelers are also required to test negative to enter, even if they are vaccinated. Further announcements are expected before Greece’s broader reopening on May 14.

Travel Level: 4

  • Iceland

Vaccinated travelers and Covid recoverees can avoid quarantines if they pass a Covid test upon arrival. Proof can be in paper or electronic format. Those inoculated with vaccines made in China and Russia will not be accepted. From June 1, less stringent measures are to apply to residents of low-risk countries.

Travel Level: 3

  • Israel

Plans to welcome a limited number of vaccinated tourist groups in May — and to vaccinated individual travelers by July — could be in flux due to a recommendation to delay reopening plans by Israel’s Health Ministry this week. The proposal, which was prompted by dangerous Covid variants emerging around the globe, will be debated in an upcoming cabinet meeting, according to The Times of Israel.

Travel Level: 3

  • Madeira

While Portugal’s mainland isn’t open to inoculated travelers yet, vaccinated travelers and Covid recoverees can enter Madeira, one of two autonomous regions of the country, without having to undergo Covid testing. The other region, the Azores, has no such provision. Plans for Portugal to welcome vaccinated travelers from the U.K. as early as May 17 have yet to be confirmed.

Travel Level: 4

  • Malta

While the small Mediterranean nation of Malta has indicated it may accept vaccinated travelers this summer, it hasn’t formally announced this yet. “In due course, it is expected that evidence of full vaccination … can be used instead of a negative Covid-19 PCR test certificate,” according to a statement from a governmental website.

Travel Level: 4

  • Montenegro

Tourists can enter if they show proof of being vaccinated, recovery from past infection or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours from entering. Unlike most countries, Montenegro allows vaccinated people to enter seven days after the full dose is taken. Regional residents and Russians do not need a test to enter.

Travel Level: 4

  • Poland

Vaccinated travelers can bypass Poland’s 10-day quarantine if they hail from EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Georgia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea, Tunisia, Israel and Australia. Hotels are to remain closed until May 3, and only vaccines authorized in the EU are accepted.

Travel Level: 4

  • Slovenia

Travelers from Slovenia’s “red list” of countries (155 in total) can avoid a 10-day quarantine by presenting proof of vaccination, including those made in Russia and China. Time periods from the last dose vary from seven to 21 days depending on which vaccine was taken.

Travel Level: 4

Middle East

  • Lebanon

For Lebanon, where travelers are vaccinated matters more than which vaccine they received. Travelers can avoid a pre-flight Covid test if they have been vaccinated 15 days before departing and received their second dose in Lebanon, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, parts of northern Africa, plus most of Europe and Asia. They must still take a Covid test upon arrival.

Travel Level: 4

Asia

  • Maldives

Pre-flight Covid testing and quarantines aren’t necessary for vaccinated travelers anymore — but their uninoculated kids will need a test. Unvaccinated travelers can also avoid quarantines if they stay on an island where 60% of the population is vaccinated. The country’s Health Protection Agency will regularly publish a list of these islands, according to a statement from the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism.

FilippoBacci | E+ | Getty Images

The announcement on April 16 stated only vaccines recognized by the World Health Organization — i.e. AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson — were accepted. However, five days later, the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism revised the statement to include vaccines “approved by [WHO] … or any other competent authority of the respective countries.”

Travel Level: 4

  • Nepal

Though it advises getting one, Nepal no longer requires vaccinated travelers to get a pre-flight PCR test. They must, however, take a post-arrival test.

Travel Level: 3

  • Phuket, Thailand

Thailand’s plan to reopen the island of Phuket in July — and waive quarantines for vaccinated travelers there — is being threatened by a wave of Covid outbreaks tied to Bangkok nightclubs and island beach parties earlier this month. The country’s total case count has more than doubled in the past month — from nearly 29,000 on April 1 to more than 63,000 as of April 29, according to data from Worldometer.

Travel Level: 2

  • Sri Lanka

The “teardrop island” created a handy flowchart outlining travel protocols for vaccinated travelers. For them (and their kids aged 12 and younger), testing requirements are reduced, and they are free to leave Sri Lanka’s “bio-bubble” — which is designed to prevent tourists from mingling with locals. That's provided they test negative about 24-48 hours after arriving.

Travel Level: 2

  • Taiwan

A pilot program to reduce quarantines for vaccinated travelers from 14 to seven days is expected to launch in May, according to the Taiwan News. Participation is limited, and applicants will have to be vaccinated one month prior and likely need three Covid-related tests before and after arriving.

Travel Level: 1

Africa

  • Seychelles

Seychelles in January became the first nation to welcome vaccinated travelers from all over the world. By March it had opened to all visitors — regardless of vaccination status.

This month, due to the rise of contagious Covid variants, Seychelles is closing its doors to some. Visitors from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan must be vaccinated to enter. Brazilians are not permitted to enter nor is anyone who visited South Africa two weeks before arrival. Visitors are also “strongly encouraged” to be vaccinated before traveling, according to a government travel advisory.

Travel Level: 4

Central and South America

  • Ecuador

Travelers can show proof of vaccination in lieu of a negative Covid test to enter. Unvaccinated travelers (who must test negative prior to arriving) and those with proof of a prior recovery can also visit, and no one is subject to quarantines.

Travel Level: 4

  • Guatemala

Vaccinated travelers can enter as can those with a negative PCR test (taken 72 hours prior to airport check-in) or proof of recovery in the past three months. Everyone aged 10 and above must show one of these and complete a health pass before arriving.

Note: the health pass doesn’t refer to the vaccination option yet.

Travel Level: 4

Editor's note: This list includes countries that are easing travel restrictions for vaccinated travelers. It does not include countries which are open to all travelers, vaccinated or not.

Lime taps user base for Complete Streets advocacy - Smart Cities Dive

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Dive Brief:

  • Lime has launched a global "People-First Cities" campaign to mobilize its millions of riders to support "complete streets"  roadways designed for safe and accessible transportation across modes and to become advocates for improving the safety of urban infrastructure, Lime Advocacy Director Jonathan Perri told Smart Cities Dive exclusively.
  • Lime, which recently joined the Complete Streets Coalition, is encouraging users to contact their members of Congress to support the Complete Streets Act, sponsored by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn. So far, about 1,000 Lime users have contacted their representatives or senators, according to Perri.
  • The micromobility company also intends to encourage users to voice their support for the Biden administration’s proposed $2 trillion American Jobs Plan, which could potentially incorporate the Complete Streets Act, according to Lime. The company hopes its presence in certain cities — Nashville, Tennessee; Austin, Texas; and Oklahoma City — with Republican House members or senators will help push those political leaders to support the infrastructure plan as well.

Dive Insight:

The pandemic overhauled transportation and micromobility patterns nearly overnight, pushing more people onto bikes and scooters. In response to those changes, many cities turned to tactical urbanism solutions like slow streets and pop-up bike lanes.

Lime studied the impacts of those changes among its users across the globe and found a 111% increase in trips by its users on streets with new cycle lanes between February and June 2020 in Paris, London and Berlin.

Lime

Lime trip changes from Feb. - June 2020 in Paris, London and Berlin

"If You Build Them, They Will Ride" blog post, October 2020: https://ift.tt/3eN3UJ5

And in San Francisco, the company recently found that while its vehicles saw a 41% decrease in trips from November 2019 to November 2020, ridership increased 28% on the city's recently added "Slow Streets."

"We have a lot of riders who probably haven't noticed the need for infrastructure in their cities until they start riding with Lime," Perri said. "And I think the need for infrastructure becomes more and more apparent to our riders as they ride more."

The company intends to encourage local and federal leaders to keep many of those popular pandemic-fueled infrastructure changes post-COVID, in part through efforts like the Complete Streets Act.

The federal initiative would provide several potential benefits for micromobility vehicle users and pedestrians by setting aside 5% of annual federal highway funds for Complete Streets projects, requiring states to provide technical aid and funds to communities that create such projects, and directing localities to implement Complete Street policies that meet certain standards to access funding, according to a Smart Growth America blog post

The Biden administration’s American Jobs Plan is an opportunity to move toward a people-first approach to city planning, according to Perri. The plan calls for a $20 billion effort to fund safety improvements for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, and a new "Safe Streets for All" program that would fund state and local Vision Zero plans.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has also been a vocal proponent of such efforts, citing his own experience with Complete Streets as mayor in South Bend, Indiana, earning praise from some cycling advocates.

"In the past bicycling and walking have either seemed to be an afterthought for our friends, or a waste of federal funding for our detractors. This Secretary's constant refrain of making a people-centric, equitable transportation system may be our opportunity to be a constructive part of the solution," the League of American Bicyclists wrote in an April blog post.

Looking ahead, as localities seek to embrace some of these potential changes to city streets, Perri said one of the biggest challenges will be continuing to reshape the narrative about the role of cars in cities and challenging mindsets about how cities are traditionally built.

2021 NFL Draft order: Complete list of picks order for the second round & third round on Friday - DraftKings Nation

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft is a wrap, and even after the picks we all knew were coming (Trevor Lawrence to the Jaguars, Zach Wilson to the Jets), we still had a night filled with plenty of surprises.

After playing their cards close to the chest, the 49ers took QB Trey Lance with the third overall pick. The Eagles traded up from No. 12 to No. 10 to draft their guy, Alabama WR DeVonta Smith. Soon after, Ohio State QB Justin Fields went to the Chicago Bears after a trade-up with the Giants.

There’s still plenty of action to come in day two. Some of the best available players left on the board include LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, WR Elijah Moore and OL Teven Jenkins. There are lots of fantasy-relevant picks to go, too, as we begin to paint a picture of the 2021 rookie class.

Dodgers can't back up Bauer's complete-game effort in Milwaukee - mlblogs.com

Trevor Bauer said manager Dave Roberts made him a promise after replacing him following his six innings of work his last time out: In his next outing, he would get the chance to go the distance.

That moment arrived Thursday in Milwaukee. The Dodgers knew a bullpen game was on the horizon, and they needed length from their starter to begin the series. Bauer, despite not possessing his sharpest stuff and his body not feeling its best, battled through a season-low six strikeout effort to give the Dodgers the complete-game effort they craved.

“Unfortunately, it was an eight-inning variety, and not a win,” Bauer said after suffering his first loss of the year in a 2–1 defeat.

Roberts said the word “promise” might have been a little strong, noting his pledge would depend on the game situation. The way his starting pitcher competed, keeping the Dodgers within striking distance throughout the night — and with Bauer’s spot in the lineup never up in an opportune moment — he felt Bauer gave the Dodgers their best chance to win. Roberts let him throw a season-high 113 pitches in the Dodgers’ first complete game of the year.

“Credit to him,” Roberts said. “He held up his end of the deal.”

The Dodger offense did not reward his efforts.

Bauer only made one mistake, but with his offense unable to carry the momentum from a late-inning breakout the night prior, it was one mistake too many.

After two quick outs in the fourth inning, Bauer walked Avisail Garcia. He got down 2–0 to his next batter, Travis Shaw, before responding with two strikes. On the fifth pitch, he spun his first breaking ball of the at-bat.

Bauer wanted to keep the pitch away. Out of his hand, he thought it was a good curveball. But it caught too much of the plate, and Shaw sent it out for a two-run home run. It was one of two extra-base hits on the night, both of which belonged to Brewers batters.

Left-hander Eric Lauer, who had never lost in seven previous games against the Dodgers as a member of the Padres, made his first spot start of the year for the Brewers. The Dodgers again had no answer in five scoreless innings from Lauer, who lowered his career ERA against the Dodgers to 1.89.

“He’s got our number, I guess,” Roberts said.

The Dodgers outhit the Brewers 9–4 on the night, but they failed to string hits together. Most of the night, they failed to get the leadoff hitter aboard.

It seemed the eighth inning might be their chance once again, a night after plating six runs in the inning to end the homestand. Mookie Betts walked to start the frame on four pitches. Corey Seager swung at the first pitch he saw in the next at-bat, ripping a line drive up the middle. But shortstop Luis Urias was positioned perfectly to field the ball, flipping it to second baseman Kolten Wong, who turned a nifty double play.

“Corey’s an aggressive hitter,” Roberts said. “They were in the right spot. That could’ve easily went through the infield and been a first and third situation. He’s an MVP caliber player. I just don’t ever want him to be passive. I like him aggressive. It’s just unfortunate they made a great play.”

Justin Turner and Will Smith followed with singles, but a Max Muncy groundout ended the threat, compounding the bitterness of what could’ve been a difference-making inning.

The Dodgers would avoid a shutout defeat, striking in the ninth inning on an RBI single from Austin Barnes off closer Josh Hader. That gave Mookie Betts a chance to tie or take the lead with one swing, but a flyout to right field ended the night for a Dodger offense still looking to find its footing.

“You just understand that we’re taking good at-bats, we’re hitting balls hard,” Turner said. “Eventually they’ll get back to finding holes, and we’ll be able to pass the baton like we’re used to.”

Quick Hits:

  • Before the game, the Dodgers placed Brusdar Graterol on the 10-day injured list with right forearm tightness and recalled pitcher Edwin Uceta. Roberts said said Graterol felt like he could go Wednesday but didn’t feel the same way Thursday, and he didn’t know much about the injury: “We want to make sure we take care of the player. If he feels like he can’t throw, just be proactive, put him on the IL”

Steelers See 'Complete Back' in First-Round Pick Najee Harris - Steelers Now

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers had running backs on their roster coming into the 2021 NFL Draft with NFL experience.

They had bull-headed bruisers Benny Snell and Kalen Ballage, shifty Anthony McFarland, and receiving specialist Jalen Samuels. In total, the group had most if not all of the traits necessary to be a successful running back in the NFL.

But what Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert were looking for as the league’s annual selection meeting began on Thursday night was not five running backs, but one.

They wanted a three-down player that was a difference-maker as a ball-carrier, blocker, and pass-catcher, that possessed both toughness and speed and could fit every role creative offensive coordinator Matt Canada can come up with.

They think they got their man with the No. 24 pick in the first round in Alabama running back Najee Harris.

Harris has prototypical big-back size at 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, but he possesses atypical athleticism for his build. His most famous college highlight is of him hurdling a standing defender and he ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash at his pro day.

As a senior at Alabama, he caught 43 passes for 425 yards — an early 10 yards per reception average — in addition to his 1,466 rushing yards. His 57 career total touchdowns are a Crimson Tide record.

“Najee is as complete a back as we could hope to get at any point in the draft and it was very exciting for him to be available for us,” Colbert said at the end of the day on Thursday. “Najee has the size, he has the speed, he has the athleticism. He has the run skills to run inside and outside. Also, he can also play in the passing game as a receiver as a blocker. He’s a three-down NFL back. He played in an NFL system.”

Harris’ ability as a receiver is a significant separator for a back entering a league that is more pass-happy than ever.

“I think I can line up out wide,” Harris said. “I think I can line up in the slot. I think I’m a mismatch with the linebackers. I feel like if a DB or a corner is not sticking me there, then it’s a mismatch on a linebacker.

“So that’s one thing. Running in between tackles I feel like is a big thing now in today’s game. I feel like I can match all that because of my size.”

The Steelers feel they have a total package back that will never have to come off the field, something the team hasn’t had since Le’Veon Bell left in 2018.

“He’s got a nice combination of size, strength and athleticism,” Tomlin said. “His picking vision is excellent in terms of finding holes. He shows patience while doing that. He’s a complete back. He’s very good in the passing game, whether it’s routes out of the backfield or aligning outside the backfield. There’s not a lot of holes in his overall game, and I think those are the things that made him an attractive selection.”

NFL Draft picks 2021: Live results, complete list of selections from Round 1 - Sporting News

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Months' worth of research, scouting, interviews, evaluations, reports, rumors, speculation and more all came down to this. Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft is complete.

Just as everyone predicted, any uncertainty regarding the draft didn't begin until the 49ers' third overall pick: The Jaguars, owner of the first overall pick, and the Jets, No. 2 overall, selected quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, respectively.

With those picks out of the way, San Francisco spurned Alabama's Mac Jones and instead opted for North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, making him the third straight quarterback selection of the draft. He was the third of seven straight offensive selections, a first in the modern NFL Draft era; South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn was the first defensive selection at No. 8 to the Panthers.

Other firsts from the 2021 draft include four receivers from the same conference (the SEC) taken among the top 32 picks, Moreover, two players from the same school headed to the same team for the first time (Clemson's Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne, selected by the Jaguars with the first and 25th overall picks).

Alabama also tied Miami's 2004 NFL Draft record with six first-round selections: Jaylen Waddle No. 6 to Miami; Patrick Surtain II No. 9 to Denver; DeVonta Smith No. 10 to Philadelphia; Jones No. 15 to New England; Alex Leatherwood No. 17 to Las Vegas; and Najee Harris No. 24 to Pittsburgh.

Here is the pick-by-pick breakdown of the 2021 NFL Draft, starting with Round 1:
