Sotheby’s Hong Kong will offer a complete Black Bowmore whisky collection as a centerpiece of its live auction of finest and rarest wines and spirits in the spring of 2021, with an estimate in the region of HK$4 million (US$500,000).

The collection will consist of five archive bottles of Black Bowmore directly from Bowmore Distillery, a Scotch whisky distillery founded in 1779 on the Isle of Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The bottles are cased in a cabinet made with artifacts from the distillery by renowned Irish craftsman John Galvin.

“This full collection of five Black Bowmore bottlings is spectacular, made even more special by the cabinet within which it is beautifully housed,” David Turner, Bowmore distillery manager, said in a statement Thursday. “Each element of the cabinet comes from our home; from the workings of the distillery preserving time gone by.”

Black Bowmore was distilled in 1964.

Black Bowmore was distilled in 1964 and was initially released in 1993 as a 29-year-old (2,000 bottles), with further releases of a 30 year old (2,000 bottle) and 31-year-old (1,812 bottles) over the following two years. It appeared as part of a trilogy in 2007 (42 year old, 827 bottles), and finally in 2016 as “the last cask” (50 year old, 159 bottles).

Initially sold for £100, Black Bowmore became one of the most sought-after whiskies in the world for its balanced smoke and tropical fruit flavor. “Its value has increased exponentially over the years, which can be attributed to its undeniable quality and, now that so many bottles have been consumed, its newfound rarity,” Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s spirits specialist, said in a statement.

This lot will also include a one-off book which details the journey of Black Bowmore over its five releases and the creation of the cabinet, Sotheby’s said.

Additionally, the winning bidder will be invited to the Bowmore distillery for a tasting of Bowmore’s rarest and oldest single malts, with proceeds from the sale benefiting a local charity.

Further details about this sale will be revealed at a later date.

Asia contributes to the largest share of Sotheby’s global sales of wine and spirits, accounting for 66% of its total sales of US$118 million in 2019, according to the auction house’s annual report in 2019. Nine of the top 10 lots in this category in 2019 were purchased by Asian collectors.
