But later in a series of tweets later in the day, Woolley said he won’t apologize and explained his initial name-calling was the culmination of multiple disagreements he’s had with Chu on issues ranging from the ward 4 councillor’s opposition to LGBTQ rights to taking action on climate change and safe consumption drug sites.

” During a discussion about supervised consumption sites in Calgary, Councillor Chu said that addiction is a “choice”. This is deeply insulting to the thousands of Calgarians who have lost a loved one during the opioid crisis,” said Woolley, adding his brother died from an opioid overdose.

“I wish I had called the Councillor more forcefully at the time…in a world that’s more divided than ever, I truly believe we must call out distortion, misinformation, ignorance, and hate.”

Council has been locked in a sometimes contentious debate over defunding police following days of public feedback last summer that detailed alleged racism among officers.

Council approved a motion late Tuesday night that asks city officials to bring information about reallocating $10 million of Calgary Police Service funding in both 2021 and 2022 for a new “community safety investment framework.

Woolley has been a leading advocate in addressing what many see as systemic racism within the CPS and reallocating some police resources.

Former Calgary police officer Chu has been staunchly opposed, saying the measure “rides on the coattails of a misguided ideology” and that the money for social services could come from city reserves instead of police.

He said he’s sternly debated the issue with Woolley at both council and committee meetings.

“I would never attack him, it’s all about the issue,” Chu said Thursday afternoon.

Chu said he expects his complaint to lead to some kind of censure once the integrity commissioner’s office is up and running.

He’s sided on the issue with Ward. 11 Coun. Jeromy Farkas, who angered other council members and social justice groups by saying defunding police amounts to “clumsy and dangerous attempts to appease extremists.”
