Former San Antonio Mayor's Land Bridge Nearly Complete - Spectrum News

SAN ANTONIO — You've probably driven under thousands of bridges in your lifetime, but none of them are like the one coming to San Antonio. It connects two sides of Hardberger Park, which is named after Phil Hardberger, the city's former mayor.

He says this is really his crowning jewel.

"We want it to be the most outstanding bridge of its type in the United States. We take on all comers," said Hardberger.

The Tobin Land Bridge is a first of its kind in the United States, and the man behind its construction can't wait for you to see it and walk on it.

"Well, I'm competitive by nature, so if we're going to do it, and spend a bunch of money, and time, we might as well be the best," Hardberger said.

The project cost $23 million in all, including 13 million from a bond passed by voters.  Even in the age of COVID-19, Hardberger defends the project and its cost.

"I certainly hope people feel that (it was money well spent). I feel that way because you really have added something to the allure of San Antonio," he said.  "We're a great city, and we have things that others cities don't have, and here's one of them. Right here."

The idea is simple, even if the execution of such a bridge is not.

"We came up with this, and we are making it a reality. It's not going to look like a bridge, it's going to look like a hill.  It's going to have trees on it, it's going to have flowers on it. Animals are going to be walking across it. There isn't anything else like it," Hardberger said.

At 86 years old, he’s a realist. This project, which brings nature and the arts together is about his legacy. And he's not shy about leaving one.

"I hope I'm always remembered for my association with nature, the parks, and a greener, more beautiful San Antonio," said Hardberger.
