KATTAPPANA: The mother who killed her baby upon birth confessed to the police that she did the heinous act fearing disgrace. Amalu George (26), the accused said that no one else motivated her for the murder and did it alone. She also revealed that she was impregnated by her colleague at the nationalized bank in Kattappana where she works as a cashier.
Amalu, who is unmarried, gave birth to the baby on August 21 at the ladies' hostel where she was staying with her sister. During the early hours of this day, the woman felt labour pain and asked her sister to fetch tea for her. After her sister went to the kitchen, she gave birth and immediately stifled the baby to death using a cloth. The baby had suffered head trauma after falling onto the floor during birth.
When Amalu's sister returned with the tea, she told her what just happened. In order to keep this a secret, the duo didn't leave the room for hours. Then in the morning, her relatives in Moolamattam were informed about this. The hostel authorities only came to know about this after the relatives reached the place.
The woman and the body of the deceased child were shifted to a private hospital and then to Kottayam Medical College. In the postmortem report, it is said that the baby suffered trauma on the head and died due to suffocation. Following the treatment at Kottayam Medical College, Amalu was arrested on Friday.
Amalu was remanded by a court in Kattappana. She was then taken to a quarantine centre for COVID test.
