A 33-year-old man who worked at a nursery school went on trial in Tokyo on Monday over the murder of a 33-year-old ex-colleague last year.
Yusuke Matsuoka, a former employee at the nursery in Suginami Ward, is charged with fatally stabbing his female colleague Tsugumi Terui in her apartment in March 2019, Fuji TV reported. Matsuoka has denied the charge and has remained silent since his arrest.
The Tokyo District Court heard that police identified Matsuoka as the man wearing a long black coat seen in security camera footage leaving Terui’s apartment where she was found lying on the floor with a knife wound in her back. Police found a black coat resembling one worn by the man in the video footage at Matsuoka’s apartment. DNA found on items in the apartment also matched Matsuoka's DNA. Furthermore, Matsuoka had scratches on his neck.
Matsuoka and Terui worked at the nursery for six years but were not known to be in a relationship. However, prosecutors contend that Matsuoka had feelings for Terui which were not returned and that she had tried to distance herself from him.
Prosecutors said Matsuoka broke into Terui's apartment on the second floor of a two-story building after climbing over the roof and dropping down onto the balcony. He is believed to have burned away a section of glass to unlock the sliding windows on the balcony.
As they worked at the same nursery, Matsuoka was in a position to know Terui's work schedule. Police believe he broke into Terui's apartment the night before and waited until she came home after finishing her night shift. He was absent from work for two days after the murder.
In Monday’s opening session, Matsuoka had nothing to say. His lawyer said that he and the victim had gotten along with each other and that a third person committed the murder.
