Trump meets with Florida sheriffs who had attended conference with COVID-positive colleague - News-Press

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Florida sheriffs who had attended a conference this week with a COVID-19-infected colleague met Friday afternoon with President Donald Trump.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood reported his positive test just hours before more than a dozen other sheriffs stood with Trump on the Tampa International Airport tarmac.

Read more: Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood tests positive for coronavirus

Chitwood had attended the Florida Sheriff's Association conference earlier this week in Bonita Springs. Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Rick Scott, Attorney General Ashley Moody and law enforcement officers from around the state were also at the conference.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, who hosted the conference and whose agency polices Bonita Springs, stood behind Trump along with 14 other sheriffs as Trump praised them and announced he had received "dozens" of their endorsements. Neither Trump nor the sheriffs wore masks. Two of the sheriffs said they had been rapid-tested for COVID-19 before meeting with Trump.

The crowd of several hundred who were close-packed into the front of the holding pen on the tarmac Friday were almost uniformly maskless, according to White House press pool reports. They stood about 15 yards away from the president.

Trump spoke around 4 p.m. after exiting Air Force One and vowed to support the sheriffs amid calls for police reform in the aftermath of George Floyd's death at the hands of Minneapolis police.

“As long as I’m president, I will never defund your police,” Trump said with a line of sheriffs standing behind him.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey and Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco thanked Trump for his unwavering support of law enforcement as they endorsed his reelection.

"In my view, there's only one candidate for president in 2020 that even understands what law and order means, and that is why we are all standing here today, Mr. President, in support of you," Ivey said.

Coronavirus in Florida: State reports fourth straight daily death record with 257

Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells was at the Tampa event Friday but was "socially distanced from all the others and wearing a mask while attending meetings there today," according to a spokesman. Wells had been "rapid tested for COVID," with negative results, "which cleared him to be with the president," the spokesman said.

DeSantis had attended this week's conference but was not on the tarmac Friday. However, he was scheduled to attend a Friday roundtable on storm preparedness with Trump. Cody McCloud, a spokesperson with the governor's office, said DeSantis took quarantine precautions seriously at the conference, but there was no indication he interacted with Chitwood there.

Nanette Schimpf, a spokesperson for the Florida Sheriff's Association, confirmed Chitwood did attend the conference but said many of the events were canceled.

The association estimates an average of 530 people normally attend the summer conference, which is one of its biggest events. But because of the pandemic, this year's was far smaller.

“Since this was a smaller business meeting, it was shortened, and attendance was reduced by 75%,” Schimpf said in a text.

Chitwood, who was not in Tampa on Friday, told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that at the Bonita Springs conference he had interacted with four or five people on the dais and left the event after giving his speech.

Chitwood said he intentionally sat in the back of a large room and didn’t go near anybody. He said some people in the conference room were wearing masks, which were optional in the ballroom. But he said there was probably about 12 feet between each person and he didn’t wear a mask there.

In other news: Florida couple arrested for breaking COVID-19 quarantine, declared an 'immediate danger'

It's unknown how many sheriffs attended the conference, but no others have reported any symptoms, Schimpf said.

"I don’t know of anyone else who is sick or feeling ill," she said.

Photos from various sheriff's office social media pages show representation from at least Flagler, Gilchrest, Hernando, Indian River, Manatee, Martin, St. Lucie, Polk and Wakulla counties. Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk attended the conference this week but was not in close proximity to Chitwood, spokesperson Karie Partington said.

St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar told the News-Journal that he spoke with Chitwood at the conference but was not feeling any symptoms and he does not plan to quarantine.

Schimpf said Friday's campaign event is not associated with the Florida Sheriff's Association.

Public affairs staff at the the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Sheriff Chad Chronister did not attend the conference and was not anticipated to meet with Trump Friday.

Marceno, Lee County's sheriff who hosted this week's conference, said Friday that it normally would have included sheriffs from all 67 Florida counties. But Marceno described the meeting as a “skeleton crew of sheriffs because of COVID.”

The Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa, where the conference was held, had a mandatory mask policy inside. Organizers set up the meeting to keep attendees at a distance, and tables that normally would seat 10 or 12 people only had one or two people, Marceno said.

“Many tables were empty,” Marceno said. “They cut everything back and everything was social distanced. It was real strict.”

Marceno said he knows Chitwood but doesn’t recall if he was in close proximity to him at the meeting.

“I can’t say yes or no,” he said. “I can’t remember, to be honest.”

But Marceno said he was tested for COVID-19 before he met with Trump on Friday. Marceno stood directly behind Trump during the presentation on the tarmac after Trump exited Air Force One.

“I literally just got tested and I was negative,” he said in a phone interview after Trump's speech, noting that at the sheriffs meeting, “I wore a mask. I washed my hands. I social distanced.”

Because the Lee County Sheriff’s Office hosted the meeting, there were other agency members at the meeting beside Marceno. He said he didn’t have any plans to mandate any additional precautionary orders for those members beyond the COVID-19 protocols the agency already has in place.

“If someone said they didn’t feel well, absolutely," Marceno said. "Other than that, we move on."

2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational tee times, pairings: Complete field schedule for Round 3 on Saturday - CBS Sports

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
Watch Now: Highlights: WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational 2nd Round (2:35)

Tee times on Saturday at the 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational are being shuffled for a second consecutive day on Saturday due to expected inclement weather in the Memphis area. The groups will be going off split tees between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET in an effort to avoid treacherous playing conditions.

Headed into the weekend, it's Brendon Todd who stands alone atop the leaderboard after firing 64-65 on Thursday and Friday to claim a two-stroke lead through 36 holes. Behind him lies a group of challengers capable of erasing his lead, with Rickie Fowler alone in second at 9 under and the trio of Byeong Hun An, Brooks Koepka and Chez Reavie all T3 at 7 under.

Two of Todd's three wins on the PGA Tour came in consecutive events last fall at the Bermuda Championship and the Mayakoba Classic, but he's far from locking this one up to claim No. 4. Koepka sputtered to a 1-over par 71 Friday, but the reigning WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational has the juice to make this interesting. 10 other golfers are within six strokes or fewer off the lead entering moving day.

Officials declare Allegiant Stadium in Vegas almost complete - ESPN

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

LAS VEGAS -- Officials declared "substantial completion" of Allegiant Stadium on Friday after nearly 1,000 days were spent building the $2 billion home of the NFL's relocated Raiders.

Friday has been the target date for completion since ground was broken in November 2017 for the 65,000-seat domed stadium just off the Las Vegas Strip.

"We still have to finish the job," Raiders team owner Mark Davis told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He said there was a punch list of items still to be done.

Finishing touches in the coming weeks wouldn't have prevented the stadium from hosting events, but officials acknowledge the coronavirus pandemic is affecting scheduling.

The first planned stadium event, a sold-out Garth Brooks concert, was rescheduled from Aug. 22 to Feb. 27 because of the virus.

The first Raiders regular-season game after their move from Oakland is a scheduled Monday night matchup Sept. 21 against the New Orleans Saints.

The stadium also will host UNLV football, which is moving from aging Sam Boyd Stadium across town. The first Rebels game at Allegiant Stadium is scheduled for Oct. 10 against Wyoming, although the school is trying to arrange an Aug. 29 game against TCU.

Clark County officials last week issued a temporary occupancy certificate valid until Aug. 22.

"I am pleased to see the stadium reach the substantial completion date, a major milestone in any construction project," said Gov. Steve Sisolak, who as chairman of the Clark County Commission in 2016 played a key role in the stadium approval process.

"This stadium has already proved to be a great thing for this community, including the creation of many jobs," he said.

Thousands of construction workers spent 993 days building the facility, and officials project thousands more jobs will be created. The Review-Journal reported the team and its partners are hiring for 4,500 part-time positions.

The state legislature met for a special session in 2016 to approve a $1.8 billion funding plan including $750 million in tax money and $1.2 billion from the team through a combination of personal-seat-license sales and loans from the NFL and Bank of America.

The Stadium Authority last year approved increasing the stadium budget to $2 billion.

The tax money comes from a less than 1% hotel room tax at Las Vegas Strip properties.

Crews overcame various issues that could have delayed the project, including the delivery of steel in spring of 2019, issues with the intricate cable net roof and the onslaught in March of the pandemic.

Officials conducted a broad testing effort and project builder Mortenson/McCarthy said in May it was working with the Southern Nevada Health District to investigate cases that were detected.

Officials announced the naming rights deal with Allegiant Airlines a year ago.

A patchwork of parking agreements will provide 25,000 spaces, stadium officials have said, including about 15,000 within walking distance. Team officials say about 5,000 of 7,000 tailgating spots will also be within walking distance.

Nevada currently does not allow sporting events to be held with fans present, and the state has yet to say when fans will be allowed to attend large events.

Sisolak said the stadium has changed the landscape of Las Vegas, noting it is visible for flights arriving and departing from nearby McCarran International Airport.

"There's a complete disconnect": Educators race to address digital divide in Florida - CBS News

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

CBS News is chronicling what has changed in the lives of residents of some of the biggest battleground states in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Whitney Johnson, 31, was rounding out her seventh year as a teacher at a middle school in Coral Springs, Florida, when the coronavirus pandemic hit. Johnson said the quick transition to digital learning posed challenges for families who didn't own personal computers, didn't own enough devices, or had devices that weren't equipped with the software needed to tune in to classes online.

"When they can't connect because they lack the technology, it instantly means they're not learning," said Johnson. "If I'm teaching a class and it's via Zoom, they're missing that instruction. If they have questions that they need to ask me but they don't have technology, they can't ask me those questions…there's a complete disconnect."

School districts across the country struggled in the spring to adjust to remote learning. With school set to restart in the coming weeks, education leaders and local stakeholders have had to assess the internet and technological gaps facing students who can't afford technology or live outside of the range of internet connectivity.

Johnson is an education leadership doctoral candidate. She highlighted to CBS News that lack of physical and technological connection with teachers and peers can be detrimental to a student's overall well-being, especially students who are already struggling with a number of other stresses.

"We became more concerned about not hearing from those kids because we didn't know what was going on," said Johnson. "Is it that you don't have technology? Is it that you just ditched school and you're just over it?…You talk to me about what is going on at home. Has that escalated? It got to the point where school virtually became 'I just need to see so-and-so.'"

In the fall, Johnson will be teaching math at an elementary school in Broward County. CBS News Miami reports that Broward County Superintendent Robert Runcie has said the county plans to begin the school year completely online in three weeks.

Nearly seven hours away in Tallahassee, Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hannah said his district saw firsthand the digital divide.

"We're a school system that's built on brick and mortar, face-to-face instruction and for us to turn on a dime and to shift into this digital distance learning mode presented quite the challenge," said Hannah. "There was a digital divide…with students who did not have devices and with students who did not have connectivity to the internet because a device is no good for us if it isn't connected and can't log into our network."

Through partnerships with internet service providers, Hannah's team helped negotiate internet package deals for 300 families. In addition, 14 school buses outfitted with smart technology and WiFi, were dispersed to rural and low-income communities, where large clusters of students didn't have internet access points near their homes. With more than 33,000 students in the district, Hannah said it was difficult to identify how many needed help accessing internet or technology. As a result, some families were left to travel 15 minutes to the nearest WiFi bus.

The county is working with local groups like the South City Foundation to help students who live in vulnerable communities and were already behind in school. The group's executive director Courtney Atkins told CBS News that when COVID-19 hit, some of the students they serve didn't have devices, technical assistance, or even transportation to pick up packets of information.

In an internal poll conducted by the county over the summer, 1,000 families said they did not have reliable internet access in their homes. The survey also gauged whether students felt comfortable returning to school. The majority said they want to return to in-person instruction but roughly one-third preferred remote learning at least through the fall. Hannah said at least 50% of the students enrolled in Title I schools in the district, are particularly hesitant to return.

"We know this virus has had an adverse impact on the African-American community. We know we have multiple generations living in some of those houses and they're just not in a good place," said Hannah. "They do not feel safe. And so I'm really concerned about those students falling even further behind."

Hannah said the county has made an $11 million investment to purchase 32,500 laptops that are expected to arrive days before the school year is set to begin in an effort to equip every Leon County student with technology.

"We have to get creative to re-engage academically and provide some type of rigorous academic program that can be distributed no matter if they're in our classrooms or at home."

'Complete package' Vázquez powers Sox - MLB.com

Christian Vazquez has become ‘complete package,’ providing critical offensive spark for Red Sox - Boston Herald

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

The Red Sox chose to carry three catchers on their Opening Day roster in an effort to provide some depth at the position, but a week into the season, it’s become evident that it wasn’t all that necessary.

Jonathan Lucroy was designated for assignment on Wednesday because there was no room for a third catcher and the Red Sox needed more pitching. Kevin Plawecki is the team’s preferred backup option, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that he should be used sparingly, especially when Christian Vazquez is playing like he is right now.

Vazquez had a breakout season in 2019 and he’s taking it to a new level to start the shortened 2020 campaign. The Red Sox desperately needed a spark after a disastrous 1-4 opening homestand, and Vazquez provided it, producing three homers, eight RBIs and his usual exceptional defense behind the plate over two nights to lift the Sox to two critical victories to right the ship.

On a team in which usually reliable offensive contributors like Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers and even J.D. Martinez are each off to slow starts, Vazquez has been an unstoppable force. After Thursday’s games, he was tied for the MLB lead with four homers this season — in just five games.

“I think somebody needs to do it,” Vazquez said. “I know they’re going to come back and be great hitters but we need to win. We need to do whatever we need to do to win and we’re playing better now.”

Not only has he been producing, Vazquez’s contributions have come in huge spots. In Wednesday’s victory, Vazquez’s solo blast in the seventh inning tied the game at 3. An inning later, after the Red Sox took a 4-3 lead on Mitch Moreland’s RBI single, Vazquez’s two-run single to right were critical insurance runs as the Sox barely held on in the ninth.

In Thursday’s victory, it was much of the same. Vazquez’s solo homer in the second inning was the first time the Red Sox took the first lead of a game since opening night, and his two-run blast in his next at-bat ended up being the difference in the victory.

Without Vazquez, the Red Sox very easily could be 1-6 to start the year with their season quickly slipping away before the calendar even turned to August.

“I think my work in the offseason is paying off,” Vazquez said. “It paid last year, and it’s paying this year. I need to continue to be consistent with my hitting and my catching. I know my defense is there always. My offense, I try to do my best to help the team win.”

It’s really the product of two offseasons. Once known as a defensive catcher, Vazquez has successfully changed the narrative. After hitting 10 career homers in his first four big-league seasons, Vazquez smashed 23 in 2019 and he’s already proving that number wasn’t a fluke so far this season.

Behind the plate, Vazquez has always been elite. He showed more of that Thursday with an impressive throw from his knees to catch Michael Conforto stealing at second, and he expertly called a solid start for Martin Perez and helped Matt Barnes get out of a big jam in the eighth. At 29 and soon to turn 30, Vazquez has developed an overall game that’s made him one of the best catchers in the league.

“Obviously Vazqy’s always been a very, very good defensive catcher, one of the best in the game,” said closer Brandon Workman, a longtime teammate of Vazquez. “Over the last couple of years, watching him come into his own offensively, it’s awesome to watch. He’s now gone from a defensive catcher to he’s the complete package. He can drive the ball out of the ballpark, he hits for average and then he’s still elite behind the plate.”

That first part took a while, but better late than never. And right now, as long as he’s healthy, he’s making it pretty hard for the Red Sox to go with anyone else behind the plate.

Vazquez put the transformation simply, and in a humorous way.

“I was tired of hitting ninth. I was tired to hit ninth,” Vazquez said. “I wanted to be a different player. I wanted to feel like I’m helping the team both ways. Hitting, catching. I’m trying to do my best.”

Half of BAME pharmacy workers have faced racism from a colleague - Chemist+Druggist

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

A C+D survey of racism in pharmacy that ran from June 18 to July 27 and featured responses from 886 pharmacy professionals, found that 56% of pharmacy workers who identified as being from a BAME background have experienced racial abuse from a colleague in the last six months.

Of the respondents who identified as white, 31% said they have experienced racial abuse from a colleague in the last six months.

Respondents who identified as being African reported a high level of racial abuse from colleagues, with 67% saying they had been subject to racism from co-workers.

Meanwhile, 61% of respondents who identified as Pakistani said they had experienced racism from a colleague over the past six months, while 49% of respondents from an Indian background said the same.

One BAME respondent even said they had “moved out of pharmacy as a result of racism”. Another said that covert racism “occurs all the time”.

“Explicit racial abuse”

Of BAME respondents, 46% said they had experienced “verbal” racial abuse from colleagues, while 15% said they had experienced “other” types of abuse from colleagues.

One example of this was “politically slanted jibes against Israel”, targeted at a Jewish pharmacy worker.

Another respondent said they had experienced colleagues not wanting to touch the same items as them, and “not wanting [them] to progress”.

Other examples given were: bullying; hostility; innuendos; exclusion; microaggression; systemic racism; being prevented from praying or made fun of when going to pray; being on the receiving end of racist jokes or the use of outdated terms; being the only person to “need a body search” and being told that “you Muslims are backwards”.

However, this is not an exhaustive list. C+D received a long list of examples of racial abuse from colleagues that pharmacy workers had experienced.

Ignored, scrutinised and “treated as intellectually inferior”

When asked about the types of racial discrimination they had faced from colleagues, the most common answer among those who had encountered some kind of discrimination was  “assumptions made about ability, character or behaviour”.

The infographic above shows the percentage of all respondents who checked each box.

Just over a third of all respondents, 35%, selected this from a list of options, with respondents able to choose as many options as they felt applicable. “Assumptions made about ability, character or behaviour” was also the most common selection among BAME respondents, with four in 10 (42%) choosing this option. Among respondents from an African background, this figure rose to 58%.

For respondents who identified as being from an Arab background, religious discrimination was the type of racism most commonly encountered from colleagues, with 55% of respondents in this group saying they had faced this. This compares to 16% of all survey respondents. Similarly, a higher proportion (41%) of Pakistani respondents had experienced religious discrimination from team members. Both groups highlighted being discriminated against for being Muslim.

The other types of racism from colleagues most frequently selected by survey respondents overall were: derogatory comments; lower levels of empathy; being ignored; being excessively scrutinised and being treated as an intellectual inferior.

How to (Actually) Change Someone's Mind - Harvard Business Review

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Executive Summary

Much of leadership boils down to turning adversaries into allies. In this piece, the authors discuss three persuasion strategies leaders can employ when faced with a disagreement in the workplace: the Cognitive Conversation, which is best for convincing colleagues focused on the rational reasons behind a decision, the Champion Conversation, which is best for convincing colleagues with whom you have a strained relationship, and the Credible Colleague Approach, which is best for convincing someone who has preconceived notions that you’re unlikely to be able to change on your own. Armed with these three methods, leaders can modulate their arguments —in terms of both content and presentation — to maximize their chances of reaching an agreement and preserving a positive working relationship.

Daniel Parent/Getty Images

If you’re a leader, it’s likely that not everyone who works with you will agree with the decisions you make — and that’s okay. Leadership involves making unpopular decisions while navigating complex relationships with colleagues, partners, and clients. But often, you will need to get buy-in from these constituents, and therefore you will need to convince them to change their mind.

There is little friction involved in convincing people who are your natural supporters. But trying to change the mind of a dissenter, or a detractor, is a different story. How do you go about convincing someone who, for one reason or another, doesn’t see eye-to-eye with you? Someone who gives you a flat out “no”?

In the recent research we completed for Laura’s book, Edge: Turning Adversity into Advantage, we observed, and then interviewed, more than 60 leaders who were trying to convince business associates and other constituents to change their minds on a course of action that they initially disagreed with. The leaders who were most successful in overcoming others’ skepticism were those who diagnosed the root of the fundamental disagreement before trying to persuade. They first asked themselves, “What’s driving my detractor’s resistance?” These leaders often pinpointed which aspects of their arguments elicited the most pushback and the most emotional reactions. Then, depending on the answer, they approached the situation with one of the following three targeted strategies.

The Cognitive Conversation

When to use it: The detractor may be opposed to your argument because of an objective reason. If they’ve clearly articulated a logical set of objections, and they don’t appear to be hiding ulterior motives, approach them with a cognitive conversation. This is especially useful when the detractor is known to have a no-nonsense attitude and can easily set aside emotions in their decision-making process.

How it works: A successful cognitive conversation requires two things: sound arguments and good presentation. Take, for example, a situation where you are pushing to switch suppliers and you’ve found one whose materials and products are superior to the current supplier, whose products have been causing numerous downstream issues. But your colleague is in favor of sticking with your current supplier with whom he has a long-standing relationship. He expresses his resistance to your proposal by pointing out the higher prices the new supplier charges. You want to prepare sound arguments that disprove the detractor’s objections. In this instance, you might point out that the new supplier is actually less expensive in the long run, when you take into account all the additional production costs cause by the current supplier. You also want to use a logical framework and clear storyline to force the detractor to reassess their thinking. For example, you can emphasize that the decision is based on cost, quality, and service, but above all, cost and quality.

Be cautious about not introducing emotions into the discussion, which could give the impression that you and your detractor are not on common ground. For example, you don’t want to make it seem as if you believe your colleague’s relationship with the former supplier is irrelevant. The goal is to show the person that, on an objective and factual basis, their initial stance on the situation isn’t as reasonable as your argument. Be warned, these detractors are not easily swayed by broad generalizations. Be ready to mentally spar with them and come prepared with facts that back up each aspect of your overall argument.

The catch: Don’t assume that getting a “yes” from this type of detractor signals a conversion into an everlasting supporter. You may have persuaded them on this specific issue, but they may disagree with you again in the future. If that’s true, expect to have another cognitive conversation on that separate argument.

The Champion Conversion

When to use it: When the detractor isn’t easily persuaded through cognitive arguments, or when they harbor a grievance in your relationship with them, engaging in debates may be futile. Take, for example, a management decision where you’d like to promote a qualified individual who performed brilliantly under your supervision, but a counterpart of yours argues that your subordinates often get promoted over hers. Even if your promotion candidate is objectively more deserving, others may still feel resentment and refuse to provide support.

How it works: Don’t jump in and try to convince the other person. Instead, invest time in personally learning about and building rapport with them. Here, it’s not about arguments or presentation, at least initially, but understanding their perspective and why they might feel personally affronted. For instance, you might ask questions about her team, and which team members she feels have the most potential. Gradually convert this detractor into someone who is your champion or advocate, perhaps by shedding more light on the qualities that you value in individuals, both on your team as well as your counterpart’s team, or showing how you value her leadership style. By the time the decision must be made, try to make sure you’re both on the same page as to which qualities matter for promotion decisions and that you’ve clearly articulated how your candidate exemplifies those qualities.

The catch: No matter how much of a champion the other person becomes, don’t expect them to agree with a decision that’s fundamentally illogical. You can’t rely on relationship along; your stance still needs to be backed by clear logic. Additionally, these types of detractors can easily sense if you’re trying to manipulate the situation to get them on your side. Authenticity is key: allow the other person to see who you are so that they can more fully understand your point of view.

The Credible Colleague Approach

When to use it: There are times when the detractor’s deeply-held personal beliefs make them fundamentally opposed to your proposal. Take, for example, a colleague who might disagree with you on the need to run a necessary clinical trial for a new product. Because they believe that the clinical trial might be harmful in some way or run counter to their values, they oppose the idea, even though the evidence shows that the benefits outweigh the harm. It’s sometimes tough to pinpoint where these personal beliefs stem from, but some combination of the person’s upbringing, personal history, and unspoken biases will, at times, make it seemingly impossible for them to accept a decision, no matter what logical or emotional argument you throw their way. In these situations, there isn’t much you can say or do to change their mind.

How it works: Rather than trying to argue with someone who seems resistant, bring in a credible colleague. A champion of your position from another part of the organization, whether they are a peer or superior, may be better-suited to convince this detractor. This forces the detractor to disentangle who you are from what your argument might be and evaluate the idea based on its objective merits. If you and the detractor are at an impasse, the credible colleague might just tip the scales in your favor.

The catch: Calling in an external supporter is a double-edged sword. While it can achieve the outcome you want, it may exacerbate your detractor’s opposition, especially if the detractor feels that the credible colleague has forced them to take your side. It’s critical to find the right colleague who can tactfully advocate for your position while maintaining a cordial relationship.

It’s not easy to have detractors, and it’s even harder to change their minds. The key is to understand the source of their resistance and use a targeted strategy that best resonates with your particular detractor. You’ll have a much better chance of getting a “yes.”

How to deal with a colleague who turns everything into an emergency - Yahoo Sports

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
It can be exhausting and time-consuming to deal with the stress of a colleague who turns everything into an emergency. Photo: Getty

You’re at your desk and working your way through an ever-growing list of things to do. Not only are you trying to keep on top of your emails, you’re also getting notifications on Slack and your phone keeps pinging. And just as you find yourself making progress, you receive an “urgent” message from your colleague — punctuated with multiple exclamation marks.

You read the email and it is clear that the work they want you to help out with isn’t urgent. In fact, you know full well that your co-worker — despite being friendly and well-intentioned — has a habit of turning everything into an emergency. And it can be exhausting and time-consuming to deal with their stress, on top of your own.

So why do some people sound the alarm for every small deadline and project — and how should you deal with them?

READ MORE: Why sleeping on the job might not be a bad idea

“There are several reasons why some colleagues always seem to turn things into a drama in terms of urgency,” says Life Coach Directory member and personal development coach Denise Bosque.

“Firstly, it could be that they are behind in their work and see this as another thing to do and therefore it is 'urgent' to them. Something to consider might be their personality type — over-conscientious, and worried about getting behind in their work.”

They may also be a “chaotic type” who lacks structure in general, not just at work. And some people simply thrive on deadlines and enjoy the drama.

“Another possibility is that they have a backlog of work and want to pass the buck because of this other job that has just come in and they feel overwhelmed,” Bosque adds.

The trouble is that they might not realise the detrimental effect their stress can have on others. Not only can the constant sense of urgency make people feel frustrated, it can also lead to unnecessary anxiety.

Firstly, it’s important to take a step back and give yourself the space to calm down. Deep breathing exercises are great for when you’re feeling stressed. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, counting up to five on the in-breath and holding your breath for a few seconds, before slowly breathing out.

Once you feel slightly calmer, you will be in a better headspace to deal with your colleague.

“I think the best thing to do is to have a quiet, pleasant word with them, along the lines of: 'I've noticed Jane, often, when there is a piece of work that comes in you seem to panic and worry and I feel you possibly stress yourself. I was wondering if there is anything we could do to help you feel a bit more relaxed, easier, or comfortable’.”

READ MORE: How to cope when your work friend leaves

Failing that, be honest. Let them know their behaviour causes you stress and that you are happy to help them out with something if you are able to and have the time.

If necessary, it might help to explain why a piece if work isn’t actually an emergency. The deadline may be further away, for example, or the project may not take as long as they thought. Stick to the facts about what actually needs to be done and remember that other people perceive urgency differently.

If they continue to turn everything into an emergency, it may be worth raising the issue with your manager or with the HR department. It’s important to try and be understanding, however, no matter how annoying their behaviour can be. There may be other reasons why your colleague is behaving in this way, such as stress at home, anxiety or other problems.

Judge Dismisses Charges Against New Mexico Deputy in Killing of Colleague - Officer

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
Tai Chan appears in Third Judicial District Court on Friday Nov. 1, 2019.

Tai Chan appears in Third Judicial District Court on Friday Nov. 1, 2019.

Bethany Freudenthal/Sun-News/TNS

SANTA FE, New Mexico -- After six years, two mistrials and numerous delays, a judge has dismissed a charge of voluntary manslaughter against former Santa Fe County sheriff's deputy Tai Chan, who fatally shot a fellow deputy during a work trip to Las Cruces in 2014.

Third District Judge Conrad Perea dismissed the case at a Wednesday hearing, ruling Chan's right to a speedy trial had been violated, said Chan's attorney, John Day.

Chan was accused of shooting Deputy Jeremy Martin five times in the back during an alcohol-fueled fight just after midnight Oct. 28, 2014, at Hotel Encanto, where they were staying after a trip to Arizona to transport a prisoner.

Chan admitted in court he had shot 29-year-old Martin but argued Martin had been the aggressor. The two men had gotten into a work-related dispute during a night of drinking at a nearby bar, which escalated when they returned to their hotel room, according to reports of the incident and court testimony.

The defense argued Chan had taken the gun from Martin and shot him as he left the room.

"From the beginning, we had stated this was a self-defense case, and in New Mexico, the key issue for us is you are allowed to defend yourself against a violent attacker," Day said in an interview Wednesday after the hearing.

Chan was facing one count of voluntary manslaughter in his third jury trial, scheduled to begin Oct. 2. It had been delayed several times after the court granted motions from both the 3rd District Attorney's Office and Chan's attorneys, court records show.

The dismissal came as an unwelcome surprise for the 3rd District Attorney's Office.

"It was not expected and, honestly, everybody involved in the case was very disappointed that the vindication for Jeremy Martin did not happen," spokeswoman Roxanne Garcia-McElmell said.

"The efforts of our law enforcement and investigation team were very compelling in this case, and … we will just continue to fight for victims of crime," she added.

Chan's first two trials, in 2016 and 2017, ended in mistrials when jurors failed to reach unanimous verdicts on charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

Perea later dismissed the first- and second-degree murder charges, citing a 2017 state Supreme Court decision about deadlocked juries.

The court ruled a "judge must confirm that the jury did not unanimously agree that the defendant was not guilty of one or more of the included offenses."

Former District Judge Fernando Macias, who presided over Chan's first two trials, did not poll the jury at the end of the second trial to determine the votes for each of the three charges, according to a report by the Las Cruces Sun-News.

In 2018, Perea dismissed without prejudice an attempt to prosecute Chan on a charge of voluntary manslaughter — meaning the charge could be refiled.

The judge said the charge violated Chan's due process rights because it was based on testimony from Chan's previous trials. Perea also cited a failure by the 3rd District Attorney's Office to follow court rules.

The voluntary manslaughter case was not examined for probable cause in a preliminary hearing or by a grand jury.

In January 2019, the district attorney again filed a voluntary manslaughter charge against Chan. This was the charge Perea dismissed Wednesday with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled, Day said.

Day said the dismissal also had to do with misconduct by prosecutors.

In 2017, Day filed two motions stating one of the state's attorneys had a conflict of interest in the case because a former Las Cruces police detective had filed a lawsuit saying she was denied resources during an investigation into the shooting.

Day also argued police had withheld potential evidence on Martin's cellphones.

Day filed another motion accusing prosecutors of improperly editing an audio recording of Chan to remove some of his self-defense claims, which subsequently was played for jurors. In the motion, he asked the judge to dismiss charges against Chan.

Garcia-McElmell said the District Attorney's Office has cleared up those issues with the court.

The judge told the District Attorney's Office to submit a report explaining what had happened with the recording, Day said, but the agency never provided the report.

The defense sent out a jury questionnaire about the trial due to the recording, Day said, and the judge ordered the District Attorney's Office cover the cost, which was $1,417.

Chan and his family are happy the ordeal is over, Day said.

"He is grateful that it's over. He's grateful to the judge for making this decision."

Charter school plans to launch complete virtual program for all Texas students in August - Community Impact Newspaper

International Leadership of Texas, a free, public charter school with campuses in the Dallas-Fort Worth, College Station and Houston areas, is planning to launch a ful yvirtual education option available to all Texas students starting Aug. 13.

International Leadership of Texas, which serves nearly 20,000 students, announced details about ILTexas Virtual School this week. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade will have access to the same trilingual curriculum offered on ILT campuses without having to leave their homes.

“ILTexas VS gives Texas families the opportunity to prepare their students for exceptional leadership roles in the international community by emphasizing servant leadership, mastering the English, Spanish and Chinese languages, and strengthening the mind, body and character,” officials said in a press release.

The virtual launch comes after school officials were forced to pivot to remote schooling during the coronavirus pandemic. Because this is not just a temporary option that will go away after the pandemic, officials said the new school gives students who do not live near an International Leadership of Texas campus the opportunity to enroll.

Classes will be conducted live, granting students the opportunity to engage with teachers and fellow classmates. Fitness and fine arts classes are included in the curriculum, and electives and extracurricular activities are available as well, officials said.

All instruction will take place online, and enrolled students will be issued a Chromebook and a headset.

The school is also hiring teachers and other staff members for positions at the virtual school. Families can apply and learn more at www.iltexasvs.org.

A few things we won't tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING. Don't include URLs to Web sites.

We do not edit comments. They are either approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment that is quoted or excerpted in an article. In this case, we may fix spelling and punctuation.

We welcome strong opinions and criticism of our work, but we don't want comments to become bogged down with discussions of our policies and we will moderate accordingly.

We appreciate it when readers and people quoted in articles or blog posts point out errors of fact or emphasis and will investigate all assertions. But these suggestions should be sent via e-mail. To avoid distracting other readers, we won't publish comments that suggest a correction. Instead, corrections will be made in a blog post or in an article.
