Outfielder Randy Winn tied his career high by batting .306 with the Giants in 2008. One of his best games that season came at Arizona on May 29 as he hit two homers to help the Giants complete a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks with a 4-3 decision.
Winn, a San Ramon Valley-Danville grad who played baseball and basketball at Santa Clara, was a switch hitter. He was batting right-handed against Randy Johnson leading off the fourth inning, and took Johnson deep to left. Batting left-handed to open the ninth in a 3-3 game, Winn launched a Chad Qualls pitch over the left-field wall to give the Giants the lead.
In an Associated Press game story, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Winn is “so solid. I think he’s one of the more underrated players in the game. You don’t hear much about him, but he quietly goes about his business and just plays great baseball.”
Winn’s final season with the Giants came in 2009, when he was teammates with Johnson, who finished his career with the orange and black. The night of May 29, 2008, also had significance for Johnson; the lefty struck out nine in seven innings to tie Roger Clemens for second on the career strikeout list with 4,672. Johnson ended his career with 4,875 K’s. Only Nolan Ryan (5,714) had more.
