A Los Angeles cop has been arrested for attempted murder after allegedly shooting a fellow officer while they were firing guns on a camping trip, according to officials.
Officer Ismael Tamayo, 44, was still armed when he was busted early Sunday soon after his 48-year-old colleague was shot in the upper body in an off-roading area in San Bernardino County, the LAPD said.
Tamayo was one of three off-duty officers “camping and shooting guns” there when “for reasons still under investigation” he shot his colleague, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office alleged in a release.
The unidentified injured cop was airlifted to a trauma center. He is in stable condition and expected to survive. Their other camping buddy — an off-duty supervisor — was uninjured, officials said.
Tamayo was charged with attempted murder and booked into High Desert Detention Center on $1 million bail, court records show.
The 13-year LAPD veteran was also stripped of his police powers until the criminal and internal investigations are completed, the LAPD said. It was not clear if the gun he had when arrested was his service weapon.
His police chief, Michel Moore, said the incident gave him “great concern.”
“I am thankful our injured officer is in stable condition and expected to survive,” he said, pledging “full support” to investigating sheriffs.
“I am committed to determining what and how this occurred.”
An attorney for the officer, Greg Yacoubian, told the Los Angeles Daily News it was “way too early to be making those kind of value judgments about what happened.”
“I think once the investigation shakes out he’ll be cleared of any criminal wrongdoing,” Yacoubian insisted.
