DOVER, Del. – Delaware House Majority Leader Valerie Longhurst has apologized after she referred to one of her Black colleague’s as a “colored woman.”

Rep. Longhurst made the comment on the first day of session Tuesday while recognizing her colleague Representative Melissa Minor-Brown on her new role as House Majority Whip, a historic move marking the first time a Black woman has served in a leadership role in the Delaware House of Representatives.

“I’d also like to make special recognition for Representative Minor-Brown as the first colored woman in leadership in the House of Representatives,” Rep. Longhurst said on the floor of the House. “Give it up to Representative Minor-Brown. You stand up girl, own it.”

The very next day, when session resumed, Rep. Longhurst took to the floor to apologize.

“Unfortunately, I horribly misspoke when trying to say ‘woman of color’ I know how hurtful that word is that is so closely associated with one of the bleaker times in our history, Jim Crow,” Rep. Longhurst said. “It’s a derogatory term and the exact opposite sentiment I was trying to express to my friend, for that I am truly sorry.”

Following her apology, Rep. Minor-Brown responded, saying she understands why people were upset by her choice of words but that she doesn’t feel that Rep. Longhurst meant any harm by it.

“I believe that the intent of what you were trying to say was not negative or coming from a bad place,” Rep. Minor-Brown said to Rep. Longhurst in response to her apology. “I know who you are, even if the word choice was not the greatest.”

Rep. Minor-Brown went on to recognize that it was a mistake and said it’s important to extend grace to your colleagues when they make such mistakes.

47 ABC has reached out to both Rep. Longhurst and Rep. Minor-Brown who have yet to respond to our requests for comment.

Things took an awkward turn on MSNBC after host Andrea Mitchell scolded a reporter in the middle of his report because he used the term "pro-life."

Reporter Garrett Haake was explaining to Mitchell why Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., had voted for two "anti-abortion bills" this week, despite telling MSNBC she wished her party would focus on birth control access as a measure to stop abortions instead.

"She told reporters after the fact that at the end of the day, she was, as she described herself, 'pro-life,'" Haake said of Mace. "She felt it was important to vote for these measures despite their potentially politically damaging — or politically unappealing appearance, if you will —" he began to say before being cut off by Mitchell.

"Garrett, let me just interrupt and say that 'pro-life' is a term that they — an entire group wants to use. But that’s not an accurate description," she scolded.

"I’m using it because it’s the term she used to describe herself, Andrea," Haake responded.

"I understand. I understand," Mitchell said. She filled in the awkward silence with, "Anyway, that was her explanation."

This unusual moment was immediately followed by more silence as it appeared Haake did not know whether he should go on with his report. Ultimately, Mitchell stepped back in to direct him to change topics.

Last May, the Associated Press Stylebook recommended reporters avoid using the terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice" unless used in direct quotations. In October, the AP rejected "fetal heartbeat" and "late-term abortion" as valid terms.

On Wednesday, House Republicans used their new majority status to pass two bills related to abortion.

One bill condemned political violence against pro-life crisis pregnancy centers and was opposed by nearly every Democrat. The measure passed in a 222-219 vote, with just three Democrats supporting it.

The resolution was proposed after a wave of violent acts against crisis pregnancy centers, churches and other pro-life organizations came from pro-choice activists in response to the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision.

Approximately 70% of abortion-related threats of violence in the U.S. since the Dobbs decision have been against pro-life groups, Christopher Wray, the head of the FBI, said at a recent Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing.

Another bill, passed by the GOP but opposed by Democrats, penalized doctors who did not try to save the life of infants born alive after a failed abortion procedure. That bill prompted anger from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

PEAKY Blinders star Paul Anderson faces an allegation about his conduct on set — raising questions about his role in the saga’s big-screen finale.

The Arthur Shelby actor was the subject of a complaint by a colleague, prompting an internal investigation by producers of the hit BBC series.

He strongly denies any misconduct and is confident any investigation will clear him.

A source said: “Paul has had an issue to deal with away from the set after a claim was made — which he completely denies.

“Of course, it is being looked into thoroughly.

“It’s still early days for the film and shooting of scenes hasn’t started yet, so it would be possible to rewrite and amend the script and storyline to explain his absence if it ever came to that.”

Anderson, 44, has been one of the biggest figures in the hugely successful franchise, appearing in every episode alongside co-star Cillian Murphy, 46, who plays his on-screen brother, Tommy.

And it was expected he would play a major part in a forthcoming movie, planned by creator Steven Knight as a climax to the saga.

But production sources suggest the latest developments have cast a cloud over the final casting.

Award-winner Stephen Graham, 49, appeared in last year’s sixth and final series and is among those understood to be on board for the movie, alongside Cillian.

And show creator Knight has also revealed he hoped to sign up Line of Duty star Vicky McClure, 39.

Describing the plotline, he said: “I know what’s going to happen in those stories and it’s about a sort of untold story that happened in the Second World War, which Peakys are going to be involved in.”

A spokesman for the production declined to comment on Anderson’s involvement but an insider added: “We wouldn’t discuss any individual but it’s too early at this stage to say who will be in the movie.”

The BBC series — which includes the catch phrase “by order of The Peaky Blinders” — ran for six seasons from September 2013.

It was based on a gang who operated in Birmingham in the late 19th century.

In the series, the infamous group, named after their practice of sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps, is led by World War One veteran Tommy Shelby.

One of Melbourne’s biggest supermarket pizza suppliers has been ordered to pay more than $53,000 to a former employee who suffered sexual harassment when a male colleague looked at her breasts rather than her face when he spoke to her.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled on Monday that Della Rosa Fresh Foods – which supplies pizza products and baked goods to Coles, Woolworths and IGA – pay compensation for the injury, loss and damage suffered by Sudesh Kumari.

Kumari, who worked in the bakery section for the Campbellfield company, claimed she had been subjected to sexual harassment, discriminated against because of her race, and victimised.

Tribunal member Louise Johnson accepted Kumari’s evidence and rejected Della Rosa’s submission that any penalty should not exceed $500.

“I consider that an award of $500 in damages would trivialise the conduct complained of,” Johnson said.

Kumari claimed that in 2017 a Della Rosa employee looked at her breasts rather than her face when speaking to her, making her feel “uncomfortable, objectified and degraded”.

She reported the incident to management but said she was met with disbelief and racist remarks.

“Ms Kumari’s immediate manager ... treated Ms Kumari unfavourably due to her race when he said to her, ‘You are Indian, I don’t like Indians, they always cause problems’,” Johnson said in the order.

Following her report of sexual harassment, Kumari said management told her to take annual leave, even though she said she was saving it to visit family in India.

Her time off work felt like a punishment, she said, triggering headaches and anxiety that made her feel “sad, like a sick person”.

After the complaint, the company transferred Kumari from the bakery site to the pizza-topping site – which was “predominantly staffed by women” – as a precaution to prevent further harassment from happening again. But when she returned from leave, she said she did not wish to shift, refused to accept the transfer and did not return to work.

The company terminated her employment on February 8, 2018 – nearly a month after she filed a complaint to the Fair Work Commission.

In 2019, the tribunal found that Kumari had suffered sexual harassment, but time extensions for submissions were made. COVID-19 lockdowns and other factors meant compensation was not ordered until three years later.

The payout included $38,000 in general damages, more than $14,000 for Kumari’s partial loss of earnings, and almost $1100 for her partial loss of superannuation.

Della Rosa was contacted for comment.

The tribunal ruled that any application for costs must be made by the end of January.

Punjab: PCS officers go on mass leave against 'illegal' arrest of colleague - Deccan Herald

The Punjab Civil Service officers went on a mass casual leave for five days starting Monday in protest against the "illegal" arrest of a colleague in Ludhiana by the state vigilance bureau.

A decision in this regard had been taken by the Punjab Civil Services (PCS) Officers' Association on Sunday.

In another related development, an IAS officers association met Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday in connection with the Vigilance Bureau registering a case against their colleague, and said due procedure was not followed by the bureau, sources said.

Mann asked the chief secretary to find out whether prior sanction had been taken from the competent authority.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Civil Services (PCS) Officers' Association president, Rajat Oberoi, said as many as 235 PCS officers across the state have gone on mass casual leave.         He further said that expressing solidarity with the PCS Officers' Association's protest, the revenue officers in the state have also proceeded on mass casual leave during this week.

PCS officer Narinder Singh Dhaliwal, who was posted as regional transport authority in Ludhiana, was arrested on Friday by the vigilance bureau for allegedly taking bribes from transporters for sparing them challans for offending vehicles, the bureau had said.

The PCS Officers' Association held a meeting of its general body to discuss Dhaliwal's arrest. Eighty officers attended the meeting, according to the resolution of the association on Sunday.

"The PCS officer has been arrested illegally, wrongfully and arbitrarily and without due procedure," it said.

It was resolved in the meeting that all the PCS officers in the state shall proceed on a mass casual leave for the coming week starting from January 9, it said.

The association demanded that the government constitute a high-powered committee to investigate the "illegal" arrest of Dhaliwal and sought its report by January 13.

The committee should include senior IAS officers of principal secretary rank as well as a PCS officer and representatives of the transport department, as per the resolution.

The resolution said further course of action will depend on a review of the situation on January 14.

The vigilance bureau on Friday had said that during the investigations of a complaint lodged through the chief minister's anti-corruption helpline on November 18, it was found that Dhaliwal was indulging in collecting bribes through some private persons from different transporters on a monthly basis in Ludhiana for not issuing challans against their vehicles.  

The IAS officers association, meanwhile, told met Mann due procedure was not followed in booking their colleague.

A few days back, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau had registered a case against former minister Sunder Sham Arora, an IAS officer and 10 other government officials for allegedly transferring an industrial plot to a realtor firm and allowing it to establish a township by cutting plots in violation of norms.

The Vigilance Bureau has registered a case under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant provisions of the IPC at VB police station, Mohali, against various persons, including IAS Neelima and the former minister, besides three directors of the realtor firm, VB had said.

Sources said the Punjab IAS officers Association brought to Mann's notice that due procedure was not followed before registering the case and sanction was not taken.

Sources said that Mann asked the chief secretary to check the matter and report back.

The Section 17 A of the Prevention of Corruption Act stipulates mandatory requirement for a police to seek prior approval for conducting an inquiry or investigation into any offence alleged to have been committed by a public servant.

WASHINGTON — North Carolina U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson stepped in to stop a heated confrontation on the House floor late Friday. The flap, between Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz and Alabama Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, had escalated after a tense vote for the House speaker.

The commotion happened after the 14th vote, when McCarthy fell one vote short. After that unsuccessful vote, the chamber became raucous and unruly, with frustration surfacing at the end of a contentious week on Capitol Hill. McCarthy strode to the back of the chamber to confront Gaetz, who was sitting with Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and others. The atmosphere grew uneasy as fingers were pointed and words exchanged.

At one point, Rogers was seen shouting. He moves closer to Gaetz before Hudson pulled him back. Associated Press images and CSPAN video show Hudson restraining Rogers, putting one hand around his chin and another hand on his shoulder. North Carolina U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, a McCarthy ally, is seen nearby in a bow tie.

Hudson didn't immediately respond to a WRAL News request for comment.

The action placed the spotlight on another North Carolina Republican during a week of intraparty discord over the speakership. Earlier in the week, U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop, who represents North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District, was among a band of about 20 Republicans who initially opposed McCarthy's nomination as they sought concessions.

Bishop ultimately shifted his support to McCarthy on Friday after what the congressman described as an agreement that "completes a months-long effort to cause the Republican Conference to reform rules and procedures, commit to specific policy strategies, and improve the distribution of conservative voices across key committees."

McCarthy was finally elected House speaker in a historic, post-midnight 15th vote. The tally was 216-212 with Democrats voting for leader Hakeem Jeffries, and six Republican holdouts to McCarthy simply voting present.

Members of Congress, including North Carolina's delegation, were sworn in early Saturday following McCarthy's election to the speakership.

Imagine that it's your week off and you didn't get a single call or text from the office. Finding it hard to process? Well, you are not alone. While it sounds next to impossible, a company has taken baby steps to make sure that its employees aren't disturbed on their leave days. And, there is a fine in case the employee gets a call. Wait, what? Oh yes, you read that right. Dream11, a fantasy sports platform, has introduced the "Dream11 Unplug" policy for all its employees to help them relax, rewind and rejuvenate on their leave days. This policy will allow the person to have no contact with emails, chats and other groups.

Speaking to CNBC, Harsh Jain and Bhavit Seth, co-founders of the company, said, “Once a year, for one week, you're kicked out of the [company] system … you don't have Slack, emails and calls.” Talking about the hefty fine, Mr Jain said, “Anyone who reaches out to another employee during “unplug” time has to pay a fine of about $1,200 [1 lakh approx]”. The two added that this policy has been a success so far. 

In a statement, which was released in February last year on Linkedin, the company said,  “At Dream11, we actually log off the 'Dreamster' who is unplugged, off from every possible Stadium communication platform, be it slack, emails and even WhatsApp groups. We do this to ensure absolutely no one from the Dreamster's work ecosystem can contact them while they are on their well-deserved break".

Wondering how a person working at Dream11 can opt for it. “To avail Unplugged, Dreamsters have to have spent at least one year in the organisation or worked on one IPL,” the statement added.
