A mom is causing a stir by asking her childless colleague to withdraw her time-off request for Christmas — believing that having a child makes her more qualified for the vacation day. The request struck a chord with the internet.
“Ok I feel terrible about this,” the mom writes in a thread on UK-based parenting site Mumsnet, attempting to justify her selfish ask, prefacing that she and the colleague get along well, but since they both requested the day off, her manager is leaving it to them to sort out who is off the clock.
“I have asked her to withdraw her request as she and her husband who have no kids normally go to her husband’s parents on Christmas Day, but they also go every week so it’s not like they never see them,” the woman writes, attempting to give grounds for why she believes her colleague should work and she should not.

“I, on the other hand, have a four-year-old Autistic [sic] son,” the woman writes, continuing to air out details of her personal life to an audience of strangers, noting that her son’s nursery school will be closed.
Then, she continues to speculate about her colleague’s personal life, estimating that since their work shift starts between 7 and 10 in the morning “she and her husband could still be at his parents for lunchtime whereas because I am a single mama and the nurseries are closed I have no one to watch my son.”
Cue the world’s tiniest violin.
“Yes, I could pay someone but it would be extremely expensive,” the woman writes, excusing a solution to her problem.
“I do feel bad asking her to do this but if she won’t then I’m going to have no choice but to leave my job,” she continues.
Few could sympathize with the out-of-touch mom with some calling her request “unreasonable.”
“Oh yeah I forgot! If you don’t have children then Christmas and family means absolutely nothing to you!” one commenter snarked.
Another had a more practical approach.
“Whoever asked first should get it. You having a child doesn’t make you more entitled to the day off,” they said.
Others were more middle-ground.
“I think it is okay to ask because you are in a very difficult situation, however it is not ok to minimize her Christmas just because she has no child,” another commenter politely pointed out.
Another summed up a frank reminder that entitlement around the holidays –and in general – will get you on the naughty list.
“I don’t believe having kids should entitle you to preferential time off at Christmas. It’s an important time for many people. If you get on well with her you could ask given the other difficulties you would have, but if you’ve previously had xmases off and she hasn’t, then it’s probably her turn.”

If traders in JPMorgan's fixed income sales and trading business receive poor bonuses this year, they will have someone to blame: a pesky former colleague who was their manager's favourite and who defected to credit hedge fund GoldenTree Asset Management to work for Steve Tanabaum in late October.
Bloomberg reports that that Gianfranco Canepa, JPMorgan’s former co-head of high yield trader for EMEA oversaw trades that have generated a large loss since his exit. The trades, which were seemingly making a profit before Canepa left, have reportedly since swung to a loss of nearly $70m.
Canepa has not commented for this article, and it’s possible he may have a different version of events. Bloomberg reports that it attempted to contact him and that he didn’t respond. Bloomberg claims that his team amassed a €500 million ($526 million) position on Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA, the French grocer, and made bets on Metalcorp, a subsidiary of Monaco Resources Group SAM. Both turned sour. His Casino position included credit default (CDS) swaps, which generated losses as the perceived probability of Casino defaulting fell and the CDS declined in value. Bloomberg reports that the Metalcorp position generated a further loss of up to $20m when the company failed to repay €70m of debt on time to investors in October.
It's not clear whether it was Canepa himself who placed the bets that made the alleged loss, or the team who worked for him. In either case, it seems the trades were profitable before Canepa exited, implying that the team could have acted to mitigate the situation.
Sources inform us that Canepa was one of the favourites of Sanay Jhamna, global head of credit trading at JPMorgan. In 2021, Jhamna is understood to have promoted Canepa ahead of other individuals in the team, not suspecting that he would leave only a year later.
Canepa isn’t the only recent exit from JPMorgan’s high yield business. Sebastian Pearce, the former co-head of European high yield credit trading left for Deutsche Bank after nearly 15 years at JPM in July 2021. Alun Shepherd, the former co-head of EMEA high yield, crossover and distressed debt trading, left for BNP Paribas around the same time. JPMorgan has also suffered numerous exits from veterans across its high yield and credit sales and trading business in the past few years, including Guy America, the global head of credit trading, who’s exit was announced in August 2022. Bhavit Sawjani, the bank’s top high yield credit trader, also left JPMorgan after 16 years in 2020 and is now at hedge fund GoldenTree Asset Management.
Following the recent loss, it’s possible that JPMorgan may want to add some new experienced traders to its bench.
Separately, as knives are sharpened for a probable bloodletting in the analyst and associate classes in the new year, some juniors in London may find themselves at particular risk.
Financial News reports that 30% of a sample of 344 analysts at banks and boutiques in London swapped jobs last year, up from 18% in 2020. Many went to private equity. Some went to rival banks. Private equity jobs are starting to look less secure than usual, but it’s the juniors in new banking jobs who might be most exposed. Last in first out is a cliché for a reason.

Fire at a northwest Atlanta rooming house forced residents from their beds Thursday morning and sent a firefighter to a hospital.
Shawn Manns, a battalion chief for the Atlanta fire department, said his crew member sustained a knee injury when he stepped through a hole in the fire-compromised floor. The firefighter was conducting a primary search of the three-story home after it was reported residents might be trapped inside.
“His foot went through the hole and his crew members were able to grab him, pull him up and get him outside,” Manns told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The firefighter was being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Crews were called to the home at the corner of Burbank and Martin Luther King Jr. drives shortly after 3 a.m. and arrived within five minutes, Manns said. They quickly determined the fire was coming from the basement level and went inside to knock down the flames and search for occupants.
Five people were renting rooms, but only three were home when the fire broke out, according to resident Cecil Garrett. He and his roommates were able to get outside to safety before the fire crews arrived.
“By the time I decided to head out, my house was so full of smoke I just covered my mouth and took my time to crawl out,” Garrett said.
All five residents were staying on the top floor, away from the source of the fire in the basement, but Garrett said the entire building was gutted and he likely lost everything. He believed the home’s owner was doing renovations on the bottom level to prepare for more renters.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A former colleague of Lucy Letby has told how nursing staff were "surprised" by how "very poorly" a previously stable baby became on her 100 days birthday.
Ms Letby is accused of attempting to murder the premature girl, referred to as Child G, three times at the Countess of Chester Hospital in September 2015.
She denies murdering seven babies and attempting to murder 10 others.
The colleague told Manchester Crown Court the baby had deteriorated.
In a statement read to the jury, the nurse, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said there had been a celebration to mark Child G's 100 day birthday, with cake and balloons.
She said: "I remember this day as [Child G] was 100 days old.
"We celebrate this birthday as it is seen as a milestone. We baked a cake and there was balloons around the cot side.
"She was very poorly that day, it surprised me and staff as prior to 7 September [Child G] was stable."

The court has heard the baby projectile vomited after 02:00 BST over that night shift and her abdomen appeared "purple and distended".
Her oxygen levels dropped and she stopped breathing several times over the next few hours before she responded to breathing support on ventilation, the jury was told.
The prosecution alleges Ms Letby, originally of Hereford, overfed Child G with milk through a nasogastric tube or injected air into the same tube.
Ms Letby is said to have made two further attempts to murder the girl on 21 September.
The jury has previously been told the baby survived but suffered irreversible brain damage and was left with disabilities including quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
Ms Letby is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder 10 others between 2015 and 2016.
