Cowboys Complete Draft By Loading Up On Defense - DallasCowboys.com
The Cowboys finished the day with three offensive players – two offensive linemen and a wide receiver – but make no mistake – the emphasis was defense all the way.
That was the plan and they more than executed it.
Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones made sure to have senior VP Will McClay on the podium following the press conference, dubbing him "the man behind the board."
McClay said the Cowboys had a clear goal heading into the draft.
""We came in looking to make us a bigger, longer, stronger, faster defense – and a team," McClay said. "So when we looked at the process and looked at all the prospects, we're looking at how they played the techniques and all those things and seeing how they tie in to what the coaches want and what we were looking for positionally and how we wanted to do things. So that was a big part of it, was spending time with the coaches. The best part of our process is being inclusive – not only just the scouts, but ownership and coaches. We all get in there and do this together and figure out what we want to do."
And the Cowboys did that at every defensive position.
At linebacker, the Cowboys drafted Parsons and Cox, solidifying a spot that had question marks after Sean Lee's retirement, coupled with the uncertain futures to Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith. Cox was a player the Cowboys initially targeted as a possible second-round pick but passed on him several times after taking Parsons in the first. But when Saturday's fourth-round rolled around, he was too talented to pass up.
The Cowboys entered the draft figuring to land a cornerback in the first round. But instead, they picked up three corners in Kelvin Joseph, Nahshon Wright and then Israel Mukuamu in the sixth round. While Mukuamu apparently told Jerry Jones he was "going to be the corner" on the team, the Cowboys sound like they're going to start him out at safety, given his 6-4, 212-pound frame.
Defensive line was also addressed on Friday and Saturday. UCLA's Osa Odighizuwa is a quick-twitch defensive tackle that can get up the field. Kentucky's Quinton Bohanna is the opposite, a run-stuffing nose tackle type that can clog the middle. Pass-rusher Chauncey Golston is the only edge player the Cowboys picked up in the draft.

Chiefs complete draft with revamped offensive line to protect Patrick Mahomes after Super Bowl fallout - CBS Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs had one goal this offseason: repair the offensive line in order to return to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season. Patrick Mahomes was pressured 29 times in last season's loss, a Super Bowl record. Kansas City's starting offensive line that day was Mike Remmers, Nick Allegretti, Austin Reiter, Stefen Wisniewski, and Andrew Wylie.
Kansas City made sure its franchise quarterback was protected this offseason, completely revamping the offensive line -- making the Chiefs favorites to repeat as AFC champions yet again. Kansas City added Joe Thuney to play guard and Austin Blythe at center in free agency -- along with getting Kyle Long out of retirement -- but struck out on Trent Williams. That didn't matter for the Chiefs, as they were able to find a starting left tackle heading into the draft, landing Orlando Brown from the Baltimore Ravens.
Brown, a two-time Pro Bowler, played on the right side in Baltimore but wanted to switch to left tackle and get paid like one. The Chiefs will try to work out a long-term extension with Brown after trading their 2021 first-round pick (31st overall), third-round pick (94th overall) and a fourth-round pick (136th overall), along with a 2022 fifth-round pick. Kansas City received Brown, a second-round pick in 2021 (58th overall) and a sixth-round pick in 2022. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is also expected back after sitting out last season to use his medical degree to fight COVID-19 in his native Canada.

The Chiefs were far from finished on the offensive line, selecting Oklahoma center Creed Humphrey in the second round (No. 63 overall) and Tennessee guard Trey Smith in the sixth round (No. 226 overall). Two of Kansas City's six draft picks were used on offensive linemen. Humphrey didn't allow a sack in his 39 career games at Oklahoma -- a total of 1,230 snaps -- while Smith allowed just one sack on 711 pass-blocking snaps over the past two seasons.
The Chiefs have completed their mission of fixing the offensive line. Here's the projected lineup heading into training camp:
| Position | Starter | Backup |
|---|---|---|
|
LT |
Orlando Brown |
Martinas Rankin/Lucas Niang |
|
LG |
Joe Thuney |
Trey Smith |
|
C |
Creed Humphrey |
|
|
RG |
Andrew Wylie |
|
|
RT |
Kyle Long |
Mike Remmers/Lucas Niang |
The Chiefs also didn't rule out bringing Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz back, the bookends on their offensive line for the past five years. Fisher is rehabbing from a torn Achilles and Schwartz from a back injury that cost him his season in October. Kansas City may not be fully done completing its offensive line overhaul.
Either way, Mahomes will be protected in 2021.

Carter's home runs, Gardner's complete game secures series win against FIU in doubleheader sweep - College Heights Herald

WKU Softball (23-11), (6-5, C-USA) secured the series win against FIU (12-24), (4-11, C-USA) by winning games two and three of the four-game series on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Miami, Florida. The Hilltoppers now sit one game above .500 in conference play and are riding a five-game winning streak.
Game 1: WKU 4, FIU 3
Redshirt sophomore Kennedy Sullivan made her eighth start of the year and fourth in a row in the first game of the day but was relieved by redshirt junior Shelby Nunn after just one and one-third innings.
Redshirt senior Paige Carter led off with a double in the top of the first inning and redshirt sophomore Jordan Ridge put down a bunt single to advance Carter to third base. Ridge then stole second and Carter scored on a throwing error during the same play to give WKU an early 1-0 lead. Ridge would go on to steal third base before the inning was over.
FIU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second inning due to three walks, prompting redshirt junior Shelby Nunn to relieve Sullivan. The Golden Panthers failed to score as the Hilltoppers got the second out at home plate and ended the inning by converting a ground-out.
The Hilltoppers were retired in order in the top of the third inning and FIU took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame due to a two-RBI single followed by an RBI double. WKU took one of those runs back in the top of the fourth inning when redshirt junior Kendall Smith scored on a fielder’s choice and the Hilltoppers entered the bottom of the fourth down 3-2.
Shelby Nunn induced three ground-outs in a row using just seven pitches to end the fourth inning. Redshirt junior Maddie Bowlds hit an RBI single to drive in redshirt sophomore Jordan Ridge to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning and redshirt freshman Brylee Hage hit an RBI single of her own to drive in Kennedy Sullivan.
The Hilltoppers entered the bottom of the fifth ahead by a score of 4-3 and Nunn put together another seven-pitch frame to send the game to the sixth inning. Neither team could muster any offense in the sixth and an FIU runner ended up stranded on base.
The Golden Panthers would get a runner on third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning but weren’t able to tie the game. Nunn finished the game having pitched five and two-thirds innings in relief, picking up a strikeout and keeping FIU to just three runs.
Jordan Ridge collected two hits and stole two bases and Brylee Hage accounted for two RBIs in the victory. Paige Carter’s double was her 13th of the season.
Game 2: WKU 10, FIU 1
Redshirt freshman Katie Gardner made her fourth start of the season in the second game of the doubleheader. She put together a complete game while accumulating eight strikeouts and held FIU to just one run on two hits.
The Hilltoppers scored first in the top of the second inning thanks to a fielder’s choice by redshirt sophomore Taylor Davis, an RBI single by redshirt freshman TJ Webster and a sacrifice fly from Paige Carter. WKU left the frame with a 3-0 lead.
Katie Gardner picked up a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the second inning and struck out the side in the bottom of the third to complete three hitless innings.
Taylor Davis led off the fourth inning with the first triple of her collegiate career and Paige Carter brought her home with her 10th home run of the season to give WKU a 5-0 lead.
FIU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run that cut WKU’s lead to 5-1. It was the Golden Panther’s first hit of the game.
WKU got that run back and then some in the top of the fifth inning when Brylee Hage hit a sacrifice fly to score Kendall Smith and Taylor Davis drove in redshirt junior Maddie Bowlds with an RBI single. The Hilltoppers left the frame holding a 7-1 lead.
Gardner only needed six pitches to get through the bottom of the fifth inning and WKU extended its lead to 8-1 thanks to Paige Carter’s second home run of the game and 11th of the year in the top of the sixth. Carter now leads the team in home runs this season.
FIU put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning with a double but Gardner’s seventh strikeout of the day left the runner stranded at second base. The Hilltoppers extended the lead even further to 10-1 thanks to a two-RBI single from Jordan Ridge in the top of the seventh. Ridge would then go on to steal second base, her third swipe of the day.
Gardner closed out her complete game by picking up one more strikeout in the final inning, handing WKU the series win.
Taylor Davis and Maddie Bowlds both racked up three hits, TJ Webster and Paige Carter collected two hits apiece and Jordan Ridge stole three bases. The Hilltoppers combined for 14 hits as a team during the rout.
The Hilltoppers will take the dirt on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT looking to complete the sweep of the Golden Panthers.

Jayson Tatum scores career-high 60 points as Celtics complete third-biggest comeback in NBA history vs. Spurs - CBS Sports

By the second quarter of Friday's game between the Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs, the matchup appeared to be a by-the-numbers blowout. San Antonio led by a staggering 32 points at 67-35, and most teams would have packed it in from there. The Celtics did not.
By halftime, the lead was trimmed to 29. Then Boston won the third quarter 42-26 for a 16-point deficit. At that point, the lead was down to just 13. Boston made up the rest of it in a 38-25 fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Jayson Tatum took care of the rest in a dominant overtime period, and Boston completed the comeback, 143-140.
Tatum was dominant throughout, of course. He reached 50 points by the end of regulation and then got up to 60 in overtime. That is a new career-high for Tatum, who set his previous high of 53 points earlier this season. Of course, Tatum didn't just set his own career high. He tied Boston's franchise high of 60, previously set by Larry Bird in 1985 and became the second-youngest player ever to score 60 in a game, trailing Devin Booker. He is the first player in Celtics history to score at least 50 points twice in a single season.
The record books will remember this as the third-biggest comeback in NBA history. The record is a 36-point comeback by the Utah Jazz over the Denver Nuggets in 1996. In 2009, the Sacramento Kings overcame a 35-point deficit to stun the Chicago Bulls. Now, the Celtics join that illustrious group. The 29-point halftime deficit is also the second-biggest that any team has overcome in the final two periods.
But more importantly, this win in conjunction with Atlanta's loss tied the Celtics with the Atlanta Hawks for the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics are now 11-5 in their past 16 games and starting to look like the team that nearly won the Eastern Conference last season again. They have Tatum to thank for that. He hasn't been quite himself for most of this season due to an early bout with COVID-19. Tatum has even revealed that he has to use an inhaler before games. But he has steadily improved throughout the season, and now, he looks like the superstar he truly is again. If Tatum is this good in the playoffs, the sky is the limit for Boston.

Ethics commission finds ex-Exelon lobbyist sexually harassed colleague - Daily Herald

SPRINGFIELD -- A state ethics commission has found a former Exelon lobbyist sexually harassed one of his female colleagues on two separate occasions in Springfield, in violation of the Lobbyist Registration Act.
David Fein, formerly Exelon's senior vice president of state governmental and regulatory affairs, will have to pay a $6,000 fine and his lobbyist registration will be suspended until Dec. 31, according to the April 23 decision from the Illinois Executive Ethics Commission.
The commission is a nine-member entity that conducts hearings on alleged ethics violations.
The decision states that Fein's behavior toward his female colleague "was of a sexual nature and was sufficiently severe or pervasive to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment" for his colleague.
The EEC decision about Fein's misconduct was first reported by the Chicago radio station WBEZ.
Fein left his position at Exelon in August 2019 after Crain's Chicago Business reported about the allegations of sexual harassment against him.
The EEC's findings that Fein engaged in sexual misconduct stems from two incidents, in March and April 2019, involving a female Exelon employee who was subordinate to Fein, identified in the EEC decision as Witness A.
The first instance of sexual harassment took place after "several people associated with Exelon's lobbying efforts" gathered at a hotel bar on March 19, 2019, following hearings in the Illinois General Assembly, according to the commission's decision.
While at the hotel bar, Fein "flattered Witness A's professional work and told her how wonderful and attractive she was," the decision states.
Around 2 a.m. the next day, Fein knocked on Witness A's hotel door and said he wanted to speak with her. She opened the door and let him in.
"Once inside Witness A's hotel room, (Fein) stated that he and his wife had separated and that he found Witness A attractive. He put his hand on her leg and tried to kiss her. Witness A told (Fein), 'You've got to leave,' which he did," the decision states. "The next morning, March 20, 2019, (Fein) stopped by Witness A's desk and said, 'I was drunk. There's no excuse,' to which Witness A replied, 'That's right, there is no excuse for that.'"
The second incident happened on April 29, 2019, after Witness A and others gathered at another hotel bar, following formal activities at a lobbyist-related event in Springfield.
Witness A left the gathering early and took the elevator to her hotel room, but Fein followed her into the elevator.
"As Witness A reached her floor and began to exit the elevator, (Fein) put his hands on Witness A's face and tried to kiss or hug her. Witness A told (Fein) to stop, pulled away from him, and left the elevator," the report states.
The commission concluded that Fein's "actions were unwelcome, inappropriate, offensive, and potentially damaging to Witness A's career."
Fein, who is a lawyer, had worked at Exelon since 2012, according to his LinkedIn page.
He is currently president of his own consulting firm, Fein Solutions LLC.
Attorneys for Fein did not respond to requests for comment.

China's new space station will need 10 more launches to complete - Space.com
China's core space station module is now circling Earth.
The module, called Tianhe ("Harmony of the Heavens"), launched Wednesday night (April 28) atop a Long March-5B Y2 carrier rocket from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the northeastern coast of south China's Hainan Province.
Tianhe is the foundational module for China's first space station. The module is billed as the largest spacecraft the nation has ever developed; it's 54.4 feet (16.6 meters) long, 13.8 feet (4.2 m) across at its widest point, and had a mass at liftoff of 22.5 tons.

Fast-paced launch schedule
Wednesday's launch will be followed by a fast-paced series of cargo and crew launches aimed at completing the construction of the space station by the end of 2022.
The space-based construction effort requires 10 additional launches from 2021 through 2022: two more module launches, four crewed missions and four cargo vessel flights, as reported by China Global Television Network (CGTN).
Three types of Long March carrier rockets will jointly launch the remaining 10 missions.
When completed, China's orbiting outpost will form a T-shape with Tianhe at the center and two other modules, Wentian and Mengtian, on each side, according to Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China's crewed space program.
Bai Linhou, deputy chief designer of the space station at the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), said that the station could support at most six astronauts at the same time. Regular launches of crewed and cargo spaceships will secure a long-term human presence in Earth orbit to carry out research and services, Chinese officials have said.

Crew and cargo
Shortly after the core module's launch, Li Shangfu, chief commander of flight missions for the space station phase of China's crewed space program, reported the Long March-5B Y2 rocket had accurately sent Tianhe into a preset orbit, and that the module's solar panels were working well after unfolding. "Now I announce that the launch mission of the core module Tianhe is a complete success!" Li said.
Hao Chun, director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office, told China Central Television (CCTV): "Next, we will launch Tianzhou 2 cargo spacecraft in May and the Shenzhou 12 spacecraft in June. Three astronauts will stay in orbit for three months on the Shenzhou 12 manned spacecraft."
Hao said that the Tianzhou 3 cargo craft will launch toward Tianhe this September and the Shenzhou 13 crewed spaceship will follow in October. Shenzhou 13 will carry three astronauts, who will stay on Tianhe for six months.
China plans to launch six more station-building missions in 2022. These will loft the Wentian and Mengtian lab modules, two cargo spacecraft and two crewed spaceships, completing the assembly of the orbiting outpost.
"The two manned spacecraft, also composed of three astronauts respectively, will stay in orbit for about six months," Hao said, referring to the 2022 crewed flights. "This is the general arrangement of our missions."
China's space station is to operate in low Earth orbit at an altitude from 211 miles (340 kilometers) to 280 miles (450 km). It has a designed lifespan of 10 years, although it could last more than 15 years with appropriate maintenance and repairs, CCTV reported.
You can view video of the Tianhe launch and get an overview of China's space station plans here, here and here.
